Averaging out each album's scores
Mortification's first three: 8.6902380952381
Tourniquet's first three: 8.8033333333333

I knew it would be Tourniquet though, as while my favorite of each trilogy (StB vs. Scrolls) are tied (even though I place StB higher because I prefer Ark of Suffering (my favorite StB track) over Terminate Damnation (my favorite Scrolls track)), but I prefer both of the other T albums over Morty's debut. And then PMA is really good, though I don't like it as much as most seem to.

Maybe not fair for me to give my opinion here, since I don’t like non-melodic death metal at all really, but it appears even those who do like death metal mostly agree Tourniquet is superior

Tourniquet is great and so is Mortification. Both of their first 3 albums are arguably their best.
I went with Tourniquet because I’m more into thrash. But it’s hard to dispute those first 3 Mortification albums…they are brutally epic!

Tourniquet.

It may have been closer if the s/t Mortification was better quality. As it stands, STB is miles better than that one. And Psycho Surgery is my favorite Tourniquet album, so that edges out Scrolls (although I do love that album too). I just feel Tourniquet was less one dimensional… they had a lot of variety. 

Pathogenic and PMA are the closest in comparison. Both are great and more progressive, but I gotta give it to Pathogenic by a hair. That said, “From the Valley of Shadows” is probably my favorite Mortification song. 

Final assessment: I love both bands… but Tourniquet gets the win!

One other factor that weighs in favor of Tourniquet is that they had guitar solos (which I like). Mort barely used them, or they were super simple. I feel that some Mort songs could have been enhanced with a shredding solo. Similar to the ones on VR’s Released Upon the Earth. 

As far as drums go… both Ted and Jayson were the best. Jayson was more intense and speedy, but Ted had those amazing drum fills.

Mort's self titled album with it's original black cover (which I like better) and it's original mort font with the two skulls and cob webs had a huge impression on my mind when it was released. Then we flip it over and there are these three grim mysterious candle lit faces in the dark staring at you from what looks like a cave, just had an awe of dark mystery to it when the band was yet unknown to the christian metal world. Now that's heavy!!! Who are these guys!!!

Then the music with it's inexorable and relentless brutality doomy heavy dark atmosphere I 'd never heard before. So for me STB by TQT, which came out a year before, was like a breezy walk in the park on a summer's day in comparison.

I like the s/t Mort album, but it’s a little too demo sounding. And Steve hadn’t mastered his death growl yet (like on Scrolls). I have nothing against it, but the musicianship on STB is top-tier!

Lately I’ve been listening to Mort’s EnVision and Hammer of God albums. I like the thrash and groove metal direction they went on those. Especially EnVision! He still had the growls mixed in and Lincoln Bowen knew how to play some tasty solos. Steve’s bass was crushing too. I like the DD Verni/Overkill style attack!

Yeah it was. I loosely call it original because it was the first I saw. But as far as I know, the actual cover by Jayson wasn't released till much later. I could be wrong about that (probably am not the first time). But at the time he Jayson cover was nowhere in sight when the album was first released in 1991 from what I saw, at least where I come from.

That’s correct. 

They thought the lake of fire cover was too brutal. But I gotta say that the black cover was fine by me… the plain black look lent to a more mysterious feel (less is more). And the logo popped more because of it. Smile

I think Believer vs Tourniquet is a more fair comparison. Mort and TQT are very different in style.
