Hot takes.

Need to give that D album a listen. The last few I haven't bothered listening to, even though I know Jayson Sherlock is on one of of them.

Don't go in expecting something like the rest of their catalog. But it's melodic, has good riffs, and very well-written songs. Those are the main reasons I like it so much.

I listened to some of it recently, it’s basically a Fearful Symmetry album under the Deliverance name

We all have an album that just clicks for us, even if it’s not the best of the artist. For me that album is Van Halen’s 5150.

I love that album.

I love all the Van Hagar stuff, but especially 5150 and OU812.

Holy Soldier - Promise Man album is great stuff!!!

Black metal, or BM for short, is better when it utilizes blast beats minimally. Too much BM (snicker) uses way too many blasts and it’s dull.

Black metal is best when it’s slow and melodic, death metal is best when it’s fast and melodic

BM tends to have too many blast beasts after eating too much spicy Thai food

I feel like I should like melodeath, but too much of it is just bad Iron Maiden with growling.

That being said, the upcoming album from Eternal Storm (Not Christian, FYI) has melodeath elements and it kicks.

Can't honestly say as I've only heard a couple of songs. I should give it listen right through. From what I have heard it's not the worst thing in the world but it ain't Holy Soldier. They should've changed their name or kept going with their style, which would've paid off in the long run.

Yep.  Most black metal loses me for this reason, that, and most of it sounds same ol' same ol'

Emperor do black metal how it should be done on their three best albums IMO.

Death metal should be like like death metal, uncompromising and well written like Mortification's scrolls or Deicide's first three.

Melodeath should be like melodeath.

Depends on what you mean by nonmelodic.

If nothing else the level of instrumental skill needed for something like brutal death puts it leagues above hip hop.

I need examples of this non melodic.

Whatever Scrolls is, I like.
Whatever Archspire - Relentless Mutation is, I like.
Whatever Becoming the Archetype is, I like.
Whatever Antestor is, I like.
Whatever Can Bardd is, I like.
Whatever A Secret Ending is, I like.

For example.

Archspire are crazy good at tech death. I wonder if he's referring to tech death as it can get wanky at times but when done right it's amazing.

Pretty much any death metal not in the category of melodeath I’ve ever heard has sounded very un-melodic to me. Mortification early albums are an example, also Crimson Thorn, Revulsed, and others

Okay but they have melody. Just say you don't like it.

Get the impression you're not into much secular music but if you don't mind it and haven't heard Amorphis: Tales from the thousand Lakes album, give it a go you might like it. I'd so it pretty Christian friendly, no anti god or Satanic themes etc. It's a classic.
