Thrash, death, or black metal?
For me, it’s thrash, of course. But I also really like a lot of death metal. Black metal has a few albums I like but it’s not a favorite genre for me by any means.

the right kind of Death would be up there as well but
Thrash is still king...Black isn't on my radar much

Just kidding, thrash is boooooring for the most part. Same with old-school or "regular" death metal.*
That being said, when black metal is bad, it's really bad. But when done right, I'd take black metal over thrash or death any day.
*Doom/death is probably my favorite genre though. When death metal is mixed with other genres, I enjoy it more than most black metal.

FIIIIIIIIIINE I'm gonna listen to a bit of it on youtube and report back soon. The only Megadeth song I remember is Peace Sells... which IIRC was very repetitive (and that's coming from an Iron Maiden fan!!!).

“What should the chorus be?”
“What’s the song title?”
“Such and such.”
“That. That’s good.”

I listened to the first track on RIP and I'll admit, it was pretty good. Still not something I'd buy, but if someone was like, "hey I'm gonna give away my whole Megadeth collection; do you want it for free?", I'd say yes.

Holy Wars is an unbeatable classic. A straight-up perfect song imo.Kerrick wrote:You're not wrong... (this time).

Hey, I understand that it's terrible when you don't care about some band and people start telling you to listen this and that and that and this song.
BUT!
Hear this out.
I didn't care much about Megadeth back in the day. I liked Holy Wars and Mary Jane but that was pretty much it.
In 2003 or so I bought their Peace Sells album from a flea market and gave them a chance.
It still didn't do much for me until the sixth track, Bad Omen, played.
I became instantly a fan of that song, and after that I started to notice great stuff in other songs, and today I'm a huge fan of the band.
For some reason this song is not a fan favorite but for me it's one of the best metal tracks ever made, and very unique too. Nothing boring about it!
It's a four minute song with three very distinct parts. The first part is a slow doom thing, the second part is a very cool mid-paced section with very unique groovy and even jazzy drumming and riffing. That was the moment that hooked me in, starting at 1:35. Still one of my all time favorite metal riffs - and I can't pinpoint at all what metal genre that is supposed to even be. The third part is the fast thrash part with solos and all.
This song made Megadeth truly click for me:

Don't really care about death metal these days, but I suppose Extol is a death/Black/thrash hybrid. Zero interest in black metal aside from the Extol exposure.

My favorite on Peace Sells has always been Devil’s Island.Airola wrote:Kerrick wrote:You're not wrong... (this time).

but...
Death - When it's done right is utterly transporting...
but...
Black Metal - Beautiful Black Metal can top it all, although BM must be just right to attract me.

There are several Megadeth songs that I think are better than Holy Wars: Headcrusher, Wake Up Dead, Into the Lungs of Hell/Set the World Afire, etc. etc.
RiP is a great thrash album but a bit overrated, but not as overrated as Reign in Blood.

I don’t know that there’s any metal album more overrated than Reign in Blood.

Re: Thrash, death, or black metal?
On the odd front, I find Rust in Peace one of the most musically perfect albums. I love a ferocious riff and blazing solos. Rust in Peace is the pinnacle of that combination for me. It is absolutely blazing in spots with some of the most beautiful, memorable, world class solos. Add to it the monster production and amazing drumming and it is a beast. Dave's vocals still had some nice bite and depth too. They weren't as thinned out yet. I understand it being overrated, just not for me. On the furious front, my 2nd favorite thrash album was always Sepultura "Beneath the Remains." Something weird about how primal that album is with its primitive but punchy production.
To be even more foolish, my love for RiP may make sense of why I love Impellitteri. Riff forward, high speed melodic solos. It is why I loved so much of Extreme "Pornograffiti." That is what gets me going musically.
