Agreed. I never got what the problem was. The original cover was boring (as were all of D’s covers from WaJ through HWIS). This cover fits the album with songs like “Cheeseburger Maker Du” and “Chipped Beef.”Temple of Blood wrote:I think the "What a Joke" cover fits the non-serious subject matter on the album.

There is a backstory including some input from Jimmy D as you scrollPethead wrote:Agreed. I never got what the problem was. Thanks for sharing, I had a good laugh with my wife looking at those.Constantine wrote:For me these are 3 of the cheesiest Christian metal albums covers ever:
However even the cheesiest Christian metal covers are still light years better than many of the old Christian hymn / folk / pop album covers like these:

Yeah, I know Jimmy hated it and so did many fans, but I stand by my comment that it fits the album.oldschooldoom wrote:There is a backstory including some input from Jimmy D as you scrollPethead wrote:Agreed. Re: Worst Cover Art (Christian Metal)
On the other hand though to really go all the way to the end with the joke I guess it maybe was better to make the art itself look extremely cheap, and I kinda love the cover exactly because it's gone all the way in being just a terrible awful cover. But I can't help but think what that cover could've been if it was professionally painted or if they had taken a real photo of real junk food meal.
But still the hamburger idea was only fitting for the joke songs and not for the rest of the album. So imagine if the new cover would've been something like a painted picture or an actual real photo of a close-up shot of some dude with really sharp teeth biting into a beefy hamburger. I think that would've been awesome.
I love the cover for its cheesiness and how terrible it looks like, so I really have no issue with that being out there. It's a curiosity item now. An infamous cover that has the weirdest possible contrast with the cover art and the music inside.
And hey, I personally know the album has sold at least one copy more because of that cover. When I ordered that album online when it was released I showed it to a friend of mine and he wanted me to order a copy for him too because he found the cover so hilarious. He would've never bought the album with its original cover but this exact cover got at least one extra sale to Finland

Well, there is a handful of serious songs. It’s not 100% like SOD.
How would you like to have a record label take liberties on your album cover art? Regardless of how you feel, the album is sonically their most brutal and heavy release. The cartoon cover is too childish. Even SOD had their famous Sgt. D character. That is a cool cartoon!

Or maybe just follow the actual lyrics of the song and have a small group of corrupt and arrogant people and humanist scholars standing at Heaven’s gate (expecting to get in) but obviously denied entry.

I think the lead singer actually posted on the CMR back in the day. This was the old one though, which was hacked by Anonymous, so those posts are lost in the internet's history.

The first one that came to mind for me was the artwork for the Stryper album "The Covering". What on earth were they thinking?!

Wow! I can see it now… but I had no idea until you menchen-ed it… (Bill Menchen) get it?
I like his voice on the Titanic albums. I also agree that this image will be hard to forget.
