Re: Recently Watched Movies
Yeah, I totally get what you mean with the Seventh Day Adventist part, and I agree. But hey, it was based on a true story, so not much they could do about it when it comes to the movieKerrick wrote:^I saw it in theaters when it came out and thought it was pretty good as well. And at least how it was portrayed, some of the events sure seemed pretty miraculous. I do struggle with the fact that he was Seventh Day Adventist due to some of their warped theology (added material to God's Word though the "prophet" Ellen White, works-based salvation, etc.).
I watched The Ritual last night. It was not bad, though like many horror movies, got a little silly/over-the-top at the end during the final reveal. The acting was good, script so-so (lots of bad language FYI), well done cinematography and special effects, and in parts was quite suspenseful.
I really, really struggled with The Ritual. I thought the trailer looked pretty cool, and it started out pretty ok. But the further I got into it, the sillier it got. The movie was well made, to be sure. But to me, it was one of the worst horror movies I've seen in a long time.

Re: Recently Watched Movies
^There was a member here who grew up in an SDA church. She shared with me some of the stuff that would go on behind the scenes there and some of their theology. It was quite alarming to say the least...
The Ritual did indeed get a bit silly towards the end... I'm curious, what are some horror flicks you'd recommend? I really love horror movies, though I've been hard-pressed to find much of any modern ones that are halfway decent. (I try to steer clear of anything with sex/nudity or the "torture-porn" style like the Saw or Hostel movies.) I wish there'd be more movies like The Thing, The Fly, the Scream series, Ravenous (1999)...

Re: Recently Watched Movies
I've never been much of a horror movie fan, I'm too wimpy... But I agree that modern ones aren't that good. Most of them rely on bad CGI and/or jumpscares. Older ones are generally much better. I think the best horror movies creep under your skin and scare you so much that you will hesitate walking from the TV to your bed. The original Pet Sematary, The Shining, that kind of movies. Psychological horror, so to speak...

I hear ya. Have you seen The Babadook? I think you might dig it... I thought it was very scary but in that slow, eerie, suspenseful way.

The Lion King
They stay pretty true to the cartoon. It is a great adaptation of that film. I didn't even miss Billy Crystal like I thought I would!

Watched the remake of Dumbo while on a cross country flight. I liked it even more than the original.
Also while in the plane, I saw a new movie about teen love among Cystic Fibrosis patients

This true story was an eye opener. I was not aware of the Ethiopian Jews.

Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood
That was a strangely satisfying mix of fiction and non-fiction with an alternate ending. Yet, 2h 41minis is way too long for this type of movie.

Jane Eyre, 2011 version. Not as good as the book, but still pretty good.

Re: Recently Watched Movies
I have seen this, but I can't remember it in detail. I do remember that I found it better than the 1996 version. However, I prefer the 2006 version, I love the chemistry between Jane and Mr. Rochester in that one. My wife and I have a thing for Jane Eyre - and for everything Jane Austen. Not that Jane Eyre is her work, but I think Jane Eyre has a lot in common with Jane Austen novels.Andreas89 wrote:Jane Eyre, 2011 version. Not as good as the book, but still pretty good.

Re: Recently Watched Movies
I just got that movie `The Curse of La Llorona', which is part of the whole `The Conjuring' universe. The new `Pet Sematary' was legit too. I'm really looking forward to seeing the 2nd part of `IT' in the theater.

Re: Recently Watched Movies
While I really enjoyed John Wick 1 and 2, I found 3 to be filled with non-stop senseless and over-the-top brutal killing from beginning to end. Yet it did very well in the box office and ratings. Go figure.

Heh, my wife is really wild about Jane Eyre, and I even started reading the book. Thanks for the tips by the way, maybe in time we can watch the 2006HenrikB wrote:I have seen this, but I can't remember it in detail. I do remember that I found it better than the 1996 version. I love the unique concept for this movie which happens to be a love story in a roundabout Forrest Gump way. You don't have to be a Beatles fan to enjoy this.
This just might be my fave movie of 2019.

Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
Most likely the last John Rambo movie.
The last 10 minutes was similar to Home Alone, LOL

Ad Astra
Meh, just meh. Even Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones couldn't keep me from nodding off during this slow, weird flick that doesn't answer questions. Most UNsatisfying hyped up movie of the year.
