You came off a little judgmental... Why single him out? I bet you there are things said by some of our favorite Christian metal musicians behind closed doors that would shock you.

No one is playing the, your sin is worse than mine, game. He's pointing out a noticeable pattern and it's bothersome. Racist or drunken idiocy either way is annoying.

We all sin, so we should never call out sin isn’t a valid approach.

You’re coming off as judgmental of me, according to this standard.

I'm finding it odd you are defending him so strongly. Listen if you want but Phil has issues and the tough guy thing is annoying.

Racism is just one of the things I mentioned. I also mentioned several others. You like Pantera? Great, have at it.
Sammy Hagar writes some of the dumbest lyrics known to man. I still like Van Halen, but I’ll call out songs like “Black n Blue” as being disgusting.

So be it…

I don’t like or condone all of Phil’s lyrics. But I do like his voice on all of the Pantera albums (although CFH is by far the best)!

I probably cringe more at Kerry King’s lyrics, but it is what it is.

Is that Kerry’s long lost brother?

I assume you mean Kerry King, and me too. He had a few decent ones on SoH and Seasons, but usually he’s terrible.

The tough guy thing was an act. Rex even said in his book.

Phil was trying to copy Mike Muir and Henry Rollins.

Generally my enjoyment of a Slayer album was inverse to the creative control Kerry had on it.

I can remember like yesterday when Phil went from the wild/party mohawk wearing frontman to the “tough guy” persona. It was right after they toured with Suicidal Tendencies. That’s when the new VDOP image came.

I personally liked the CFH attitude and image way more.

I agree that he has/had issues.

Even he will admit that. He’s trying to repair the damage. Notice he’s been out of the headlines for stupid stuff. He needed to hit bottom to realize he needed to get his life together.

Hopefully he stays the course. The last one was a wake up call. We are in a cancel culture world now.

I’ll say this for Gary: he was more than happy to sing any era of VH live.

Cemetery Gates is good, but every other Pantera song I’ve heard has been truly awful

Shattered from the same album is fantastic!

Hot take:
I think Phil Anselmo was better when he was doing Rob Halford type high pitched vocals instead of the "attitude growl voice" he became famous for.

Another hot take:

Biggest Part of Me and Takin' My Life from Pantera's first two albums (the ones before Phil Anselmo was the singer) are better songs than almost everything they did later.

Also Burnnn from the first album with Phil Anselmo is better than almost everything they did after.

Power Metal and CFH had Phil’s best vocals. It’s not really a “hot take” though… I think the fans are almost equally divided on his voice. Maybe 60/40… with the attitude fans the small majority.

It’s funny about what is considered attitude. Most rock stars have a form of attitude to get up on a stage and feel like all eyes are on me. Even Kurt Cobain had an attitude sometimes. He would rail against corporate media stuff and whatever pissed him off.

I guess the Phil kind of attitude was the dreaded macho variety. He was the villain. Or as the pro wrestlers would say: “the heel”. It’s all theater. Phil is an introvert in reality. He likes to stay away from the public eye when not touring.
