Favorite Genres
Hi! I was hoping that this was the right forum to post this in.
Since it can include ALLL genres (including, but not limited to: Hard Rock and Metal). Feel free to move this thread to another forum if seen fit by a mod/admin.
Anyway - what are your top favorite genres of music? All time. Anywhere. What do you have most of in your collection?
Mine would be:
1. Heavy Metal
2. Synthpop
3. Glam Metal
4. Hard Rock
5. Power Metal
6. Alternative Rock
7. Thrash Metal
8. Pop Rock
9. AOR
10. Symphonic Metal
Just curious to see what kind of genres everybody here is into. Seems like a cool bunch of peeps here. Lots of variety and what not. Yet commonalities as well.

Re: Favorite Genres
I pretty much find something to like in almost every genre. Only genres i dont care for are folk, new age, jazz, and Dubstep/EDM. I even like a handful of R&B acts (the commodores, adele, michael jackson, lionel richie).

This is confusing. I though this thread was about metal subs.RavenWolf wrote:ThomasEversole wrote:Almost a duplicate compared to your poll on the other thread...

A style not mentioned probably becuse there is so little of it to be found is Latin metal. Not metal en español, but metal with Latin music infused. E. g. Puya(1st album.)
If we're talking other than metal.
Salsa
Merengue
Latin rock
Cumbia
Son

Re: Favorite Genres
My wife teases me that I "only listen to Christian rock." Expand both "Christian" and "rock" so broadly that they become guidelines at best and you have the right idea of my tastes. I like everything from mellow Phil Keaggy to Mental Destruction.
Without getting too much into sub-genres here's my list:
1. Heavy metal - anything with melody and clean vocals: classic, glam, power, symphonic, prog, etc.
2. Hard rock
3. Christian black/unblack
4. Metalcore
5. Death
6. Thrash
7. Industrial
8. All other types of hard music (doom, folk metal, etc.)
9. Select CCM artists (Rich Mullins)
Ask me again in 6 months and some of the list may change. Lately I've been listening to A LOT of The Choir, 77's, and other lite rock/alternative. Overall this may be #8.5 but lately #2?

Re: Favorite Genres
Yeah, I hear you. I love Heavy Metal moreso than any other genre, but I also love other stuff too. And that is healthy for a Metalhead.
The only genres I DON'T like are:
Jazz, Rap, and R&B/Soul

I know there is a lot of talent there and I'm not slamming the genre. I just never could get into it ... same with Rap and R&B.
I used to dislike Country too, but over the years I've gotten into it some. I guess I'm getting old lol.

Yeah, I understand what you mean.
For me, Jazz just isn't my cup of tea. I can dig the Blues. But not Jazz, even though they are related.
In fact, I often stay away from too much "Prog" stuff, whether Rock or Metal ... simply because much Prog has a lot of Jazz in it.

Just curious what about Jazz you dont like? is it the brass element? I figure someone who enjoys Ambient would enjoy Jazz
I like some guitar jazz but thats really about it
Love me some Blues but its gotta be the old stuff nothing too modern

Good question. I think it's the 'overall feel' of Jazz. Just makes me think of the 1920s and the Great Depression and all that. My Gramma (God rest her soul) was a Jazz fan. I never could get into it though.
Whereas with Ambient, I get a different feel. Suits me. I guess you could say Ambient is kinda like my 'personal' Jazz. I love the overall feel of Ambient music.

Funny you should mention the grandmother. Mine used to refer to my rock and metal music as 'that jazzy stuff.' Age and reference points are what count, I guess.RavenWolf wrote:Aaron C wrote:Just curious what about Jazz you dont like? is it the brass element? Oh man! It's pretty much the opposite for me. Love jazz, PROG IS MY LIFE, and blues is kinda meh. I can do some of the oldies like Muddy Waters and B.B. King, and of course most early metal/hard rock like Hendrix and Zeppelin is blues-based which I dig. But say like The Rolling Stones start going all white-boy bluesy, at that point I just check out.
There's some jazz that doesn't sound too jazzy. I always rec Mahavishnu Orchestra to all metalheads skeptical of jazz.

Big Band makes me think of the 1920s and depression era. I'll have to see if I have some good guitar jazz to whet your whistle. I dont mind Big Band stuff myself, I perfer the New Swing , Ambient is good stuff too Id recommend Ishur Ninku especially the song Dawn of Ra
