Re: Favorite Genres
Yeah, I know what you mean about guitar jazz. It's not bad. I don't hate it or anything.
I tried looking up Ishur Ninku, but they are not on RYM for some reason.
Is it a local artist?

Re: Favorite Genres
Right now, my favorite music is any music that clearly gives a Christian world view or encourages me in my faith. That could be anything from power metal, CCM or Hip Hop.

Re: Favorite Genres
From a purely entertainment perspective....
1 ) Classic Metal and Hard Rock. ( Priest, Rainbow, Dio, UFO, Saxon, etc )
2 ) Throw back Classic Metal. ( Striker, Enforcer, Cauldron, Skull Fist )
3 ) Power Metal / Death Metal ( Death, Nile, Deseased, Carcass )
4 ) Less extreme Black Metal ( like black 'n roll maybe ? )
5 ) some Metalcore ( old All That Remains, Old Killswitch Engage, God forbid )
..also...at the number one spot I would put bands like Into Eternity and Nevermore...but they don't fit in any one genre of metal.

Re: Favorite Genres
-Nordic folk
-Classical-esp Baroque era
-melodic death metal
-folk metal
-black metal, both the ferocious hyper blast beat stuff and a few symphonic ones if they don't overdo it
-old school death metal-malevolent creation, death, obituary, dismember, and yeah, I think Mortification can stand right there with them, etc
-bands that I'm honestly not sure what they are anymore. progressive+death/black/folk whatever. think Enslaved, Amorphis, Borknagar, etc.
-industrial/groove stuff. mnemic, sybreed, fear factory, etc
-Johnny Cash. He is a genre unto himself.

I really like the NYCH bands you listed and other hardcore like this myself. Not so much for the music, I mean it's ok, but more for the ideology behind a lot of them. It's like my thoughts and feelings about society and the world have been sucked out of me and spilled over a whole music scene. Somebody gets it, and because of these guys I know I'm not alone in how I think or feel.

Re: Favorite Genres
As a genre, country has to be my favorite, but almost entirely from the 40s, 50, 60s, 80s, and 90s.
Classical
Metal: doom, black, brutal death, thrash, djent and djent-adjacent
Zeuhl
Some particular strains of 80s and 90s pop

Re: Favorite Genres
Really I like most types of music except Opera, Bachata, Salsa, and non-stop screaming stuff (like much of Metalcore).
I also generally don't care for music that has been done so many times before unless there's something about the sound or style of the band or artist that intrigues me. So Euro power metal for instance, usually bores me to tears because to me all the bands sound very much alike. It's not that I actively dislike the music, it's just the banality of hearing 100's of bands that sound the same, with more forming everyday.

Re: Favorite Genres
Even though I don't care for Flower Power metal either, if you replaced all the demonic hip-hop and pop with flower metal and filled the airwaves with it instead, the world would be a better place. I wouldn't mind cuz at least it's tolerable and musical for the most part as well as having a better effect on society.Constantine wrote:So Euro power metal for instance, usually bores me to tears because to me all the bands sound very much alike. Modern hip hop and pop has had a degrading effect on society and it continues to do so.

Re: Favorite Genres
At least “flower power” metal can be good, even if a lot of bands play it. As for pop and hip hop, not only is it repetitive but the style itself is mind-numbingly atrocious. Not to mention the degenerate lyrics

Re: Favorite Genres
If we really want to talk about the morality or immorality
of certain genres, there's much to be said about the degrading effect of every genre because they all have their ungodly worldviews that influence people away from godliness and salvation. Every Euro power metal song that sings about being ones own master and "I am invincible" is every bit as ungodly in its message as the hip hop song talking about shooting cops and abusing women. We might hate some more than others but ultimately they're both anti-Biblical in their worldview.

Re: Favorite Genres
Absolutely. But the widespread prevalence of modern hip hop and pop among the younger generations and its extensive airplay every which way you turn has had I would say a bigger impact.
Furthermore, there are problematic lyrics among any genre. But modern secular hip hop and pop is almost completely irredeemable lyrically.
One final point: leaving lyrics aside, there is something to be said for higher aesthetic quality as something of value. Metal is hardly the highest form ascetically, but modern hip-hop and pop is at the very bottom, by and large.

Re: Favorite Genres
I think you mean aesthetic....for the most part I would agree and we could have a very long discussion on how pop culture and even bad metal music can affect one's ability to appreciate or even recognize higher culture, beauty, and aesthetics. Been there. Frankie Shaffer wrote a good book about it once too.

Sorry, typing with too little caffeine here. I did not mean the quality of being a monk.
Yep. I would encourage metalheads to branch out and learn to appreciate other genres, especially classical.

To be fair, some metal-adjacent genres (like grindcore) are even more aesthetically bankrupt than pop and hip hip

You may be talking about lyrics but even musically, grindcore, sludgecore, and other metal can be just as mind-numbing and repetitive as hip hop or rap.seth wrote:To be fair, some metal-adjacent genres (like grindcore) are even more aesthetically bankrupt than pop and hip hip
