Re: More great PR from the left for Christianity
This guy pretty well nailed it. He didn't say anything I didn't already know. It got tedious toward the end. Also, though I never expected it, it would have nice to see him clarify the true gospel. That's the issue here. We have a bunch of marauders posing as Christians teaching a false gospel.
This is why I hate those false teachers so much. They take advantage of the most vulnerable and worse, bring the true gospel into public derision.
I think you should have put a language warning.

Your right, nothing new that hasn't been posted here before. But when the secular world makes comments about things that some in the Church still accept, I will highlight it. I know many non Christians like to use this stuff to justify their rejection of the true Gospel, but the Church shouldn't be helping them out in that. Christians that care about the Gospel should stand in unison against what the WoF promotes. I post this stuff more for Christians who still don't understand the problems with these particular false Christian message and teachings. For those who don't understand the effects it may have on them and the public perception of Christianity. I post stuff like this for any of the hold outs. The Christian church has declared the teachings of JWs or Mormons as false ( although in some circles that's kind of changing ), but many still give WoF a pass.
Yeah, I would expect any secular person to tell the audience what true Christian beliefs entail. The left almost always use this kind of stuff to marginalize Christianity.

Re: More great PR from the left for Christianity
Of course I get how things like this can be used as excuses and make the entire idea of following Jesus seem like a dupe and easy to dismiss. Truly, it's sad and damaging.
This really wasn't at all unfair though. It was brief, but he made clear at the very beginning that most churches do great things and was very specific toward prosperity televangelists the whole time including insinuations that God would disagree (although I have no impression that Oliver would believe in God or the God of the Bible). If you want to do comedy, this kind of thing is great fodder and I think it's hard to blame somebody for using it. Much less "the left" as though it's political or whatever?
My two takeaways:
1) Wow, I didn't know how Tilton really operated with those letters, that was both interesting and disturbing.
2) Honestly, that was pretty funny and IMO a roaring success from an entertainment standpoint.

I didn't know those specifics about Tilton either, but wasn't at all surprised. Years ago in my ignorance I went to see Mario Murillo and signed his mailing list. For a few years I got lots of letter asking for money, although nowhere as manipulative as Tilton. I found them in bad taste.Grindboy wrote:My two takeaways:

Re: More great PR from the left for Christianity
I knew there was some real garbage out there, but especially with the prosperity crowd I sometimes could give the benefit of the doubt, that maybe it's sincere belief if these guys preach prosperity and then they get rich, that would naturally strengthen their belief that the prosperity deal is real, so maybe they're innocently deceived and then confirmed, if that makes sense, right? But dang, those letters and the way that went just sound more like an e-mail from a rich Nigerian prince looking to fence a few million through my bank account than a sincerely wrong/misled preacher. Pretty rough stuff.

Reminds me of what happened in the metal scene. It used to be only fist pumping and head banging....Candlemass wrote:
