Do all of you know music?

It's always frustrating too because I can't read hymns. I only sing along because I know the tune from memory, but I can't pickup a hymnbook and sing hymns I've never heard before.

There are a few songs I want to make grindcore covers of, but I cant reproduce the music since I cant read music and I cant seem to reproduce it on a computer by ear either. Time to recruit a guitarist i guess

A lot of musically gifted people in this place!  I didn't pick up an acoustic guitar until grad school about 13 years ago (and I've played in various church choirs for almost as long).  I joke that I can sight read chords, but musical notes... not so much.  I can play chords and scales on the piano, but would need to spend a LOT more time practicing to proficiently sightread music.

I can read music, but I'm rusty. I play guitar, bass, and drums, and I would consider myself fairly good. I have perfect pitch, which is nice, except when you hear something that's out and that you can't tune...

I play, listen to and write music and by write I mean goof around on the bass, memorize it and then keep adding on to it. I play by ear since I can't write notes or tabs lol. Picking up an instrument and learning songs is awesome though. You don't have to turn it into a career. I love my bass and I play other instruments but I'm not trying to be a mega rock star or anything. It would be neat to join a local band though and get my name on an album or 2. A lot of thrash bands tend to do that.

I'm actually in sort of the opposite position.  I've been playing instruments and reading music since I was 10 and I have three music degrees.  What I wish, however, is that I could pick up things by ear better.  My stepfather can play anything he hears, and I wish I could do that.  I know I could train myself to do it, but I don't have time to put in the effort right now.

Did your music coursework involve this?  We had to identify intervals and transcribe rhythms and melodies in exams.  The composition stream were, unsurprisingly, amazing at this, those of us in performance, more average.

Still, I find a disconnect between the conscious and unconscious mind here.  Often the hand can automatically play what is heard, while the intellect fails to register the intervals.  That said, last week I put this into practice for the first time in a while, transcribing the main melody from Antestor's Raade in my head.  Granted, it's slow and simple, but I was pleased I got it right.

Rather than formally practice intervals, a more fun way is to transcribe solos you like, or play along and attempt to mimic it as well as possible in real time.

I mess around with guitar and bass kind of as a side hobby. I don't "know" music theory or anything. I know a handful of scales and some metal songs. I do have fun messing around and finding new combinations and sounds.

I teach public school choir in a small midwestern town. I read music proficiently and attempt to teach the skill to teenagers with varying degrees of success! I played saxophone throughout high school and college, and play piano and sing in the praise band at my church.

I play guitar and bass mostly have played in cover bands for a buck and some original stuff. I plan to get back into writing some stuff again soon i get some other "stuff" out of the ways.

I play trumpet, french horn, baritone horn, trombone, guitar, bass, and I can fake it on piano if I have a bit of warning so I can practice...and I sing. Music major in college, so I read music and I can pick up things by ear really easy due to understanding music theory.

But mostly these days I'm a bassist...
