Petra, On Fire! and Jekyll & Hyde metal or not?

Hard rock is just a subgenre of metal.  The forefathers of metal were hard rock.  Metal became the overarching term for all the subgenres of heavy music that subsequently came.

Here's a good family tree graphic.  Up for debate, but I think the general consensus would agree with the historical sequence of genres at least (ignore the bands included in each, because some are a little off).

It's ok. It's lacking genres, some band placements are hilarious (COB in thrash lol), thrash should definitely be connected to death metal, but yeah. 
 

These are decent, but kinda lacking. I might make my own.

They're hard rock, but J&H is very close to being metal imo.

That is a great map!  It even has a couple of genres I've never heard of that I'll have to investigate.  Trance Metal and Neue Deutsche Härte (although I know Rammstein, didn't know it was part of a genre with other bands).

Wow! Such a lively discussion over such an important…well, maybe not so important… subject. I don’t think anything Petra did was metal. After On Fire, Bob Hartman made a specific choice to return to a more arena rock sound because they were getting too close to metal and he didn’t want to be a metal band.

lol. I'm still shocked that they included an Unblack section and included Stryper in the Glam section. The only thing is... it doesn't have easycore... I'm I the only person outside of the bands to know that genre lol?

Going out on a limb and say there's a few metal songs on J&K.  Maybe even a couple on On Fire!

Would everyone agree that at least Defector and Test of Time can be considered metal?

Could This Means War be considered metal (the song itself, the album is closer to AOR/Synth pop).

That's just a punk genre at that point. And I'm not really surprised about Stryper, they were really popular glam metal, up there with some of the more popular secular glam bands.

That's just a punk genre at that point. And I'm not really surprised about Stryper, they were really popular glam metal, up there with some of the more popular secular glam bands.

Well, they included every other core genre and most punk genres except pop-punk. I wouldn't be surprised by Stryper, but the song choice really surprised me. You would expect To Hell With The Devil, they put Free (one of my personal favs)

Yes.  Although they mentioned it on the latest Core Values podcast for some band they were playing, so the term is out there.  The band they played sounded just like very slightly aggressive pop punk to me, so it's not actually a metal or core genre IMO.

A. A song doesn't need a guitar solo to be metal (coming from a guitarist)
B. Defector has lead guitar lines that are soloish at the end, and I don't remember a keyboard solo in it?
