My whole approach to playing guitar is because of him. Taught myself to play by learning Metallica songs as a teen and developed a super-tight rhythm style as a result.
Most of my other favs are rhythm players as well.
As far as lead players go, I really enjoy Nuno Bettencourt - although I still love Alex Skolnick's work on the classic Testament albums as well.

I've actually wondered what Skolnick would sound like in Megadeth but I think those two in a room would combust.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with EVH. He's the pioneer and the pinnacle of cool was when Eddie first came on stage with the Frankenstein w/ those stripes. Cool was all down hill after that. I'm not a musician, so I can only repeat what I read about his playing style which was that his "swing" can't be copied or no one can compare to it. But I really don't know what that means.
Post-shred era, I think the best player to come along is Carl Johan Grimmark. He's got it all super-skills plus taste and style. He's got great vibrato and knows when to play the right note at the right time.

Another one I just thought of is Tommy Johansson, particularly his work in Golden Resurrection. I might even put him above Impellitteri, because he sounds more musical while still being able to play extremely fast and technical stuff

Another favorite of mine is John Sykes. His work on Whitesnake’s 1987 is insane.

Fredrick Thordindal and/or Martin Hagstrom. I can't think anyone else who makes a better groove than they do.
Im a bassist, so I will also say, my favorite bassist is Adam Nolly. I can watch the guy play bass forever. I don't even care about Periphery all that much, I just enjoy Nolly

Eddie Van Halen, Chris Impellitteri, Joe Satriani and Stevie Ray Vaughan all come to mind.
But my all time favorite(Metal aside) would have to be Phil Keaggy. He does play some rock but mostly instrumental acoustic driven guitar.
Dave Beegle is right up there as well.

I like pretty much every player that was mentioned above.
I got to keep it simple… I give it to the guy that started heavy metal: Tony Iommi. He’s not technical or a shredder, but he’s the greatest riff master that inspired almost everyone after him.

Jeff Loomis from Nevermore.
He’s a total package player that is equally good at rhythm and lead playing. He can carry a band without the need for a second player (if he chooses).

Look at what Randy Rhoads accomplished with only two albums with Ozzy. Imagine what else he would have done if he lived. He took what EVH did and added his own ideas by blending in his classical influences. I love Eddie’s innovative style, but I’m telling you Randy was already surpassing him in certain ways.

I used to be about the technical skill a player has as a shredder, but now I am more impressed by the atmosphere and feeling a guitarist creates. To me, playing with feeling trumps flashy stuff. And if they can manage to combine the two, it’s all the better!
A good example of that is what Vito Bratta did. Same with Rocky George from Suicidal. He had tons of feeling in his playing.

Jeff Beck was amazing and innovative. A little bit avant-garde… but still great.
Fast Eddie Clarke from Motörhead and Fastway was underrated. That dude had some great riffs!
