all-time favorite metal song (musically)

(wasn't sure which forum to put this in)

the favorite threads made me think of "all-time favorite metal song"
I said musically because I would have a lot narrower pool to pick from
if the lyrics being excellent was part of the criteria...

OK you're on that desert island an you can only have ONE song w/you.
What's it gonna be? What's the perfect, favorite, however you want to
say it, metal tune for you?


for a long time mine was Peace Sells by Megadeth but at some point it
was edged out...it's a slight edging, but my all-timer musically speaking,
as the lyrics are quite vile and anything but Christ honoring, is...

Wake Up Dead by Megadeth

its the perfect metal tune in every regard.
guitar tone, drums, vocals, you name it...save for the lyrics

This is a big ask, crucifyd! Not the best album or song of a band, or the best album, band or song of a sub-genre or decade, but the all-time favourite song of any type of metal of any decade! I'm gonna have to chew on this for a bit.

I'm really, really bad at determining whether just one song or band is my favourite. But here are a few evergreens in my casa:

Gloriam Dei - Look to the Cross
Hammerfall - Secrets
Northern Flame - Glimpse of Hope

Theocracy - Mirror of Souls
Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars

First that comes to mind is Holy Wars by Megadeth in secular and Theodicy on Trial by TQT in Christian. Could be different tomorrow.

For me, secular: Iron Maiden - The Wickerman or sometimes Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, depending on my mood. 


Christian: Place Of Skulls - Blood Of Jesus, though Virgin Black - ...And I Am Suffering is right up there too.

I want a song that draws me to Christ.

I'm going to keep posting and say I keep changing my mind. It'll end up being my top 5 or something like that!

Theocracy: Master Storyteller

I'm gonna go with my gut as well and just say Theocracy - Absolution Day. But it's hard for me to pick a single song to represent all of metal, because what I want from power metal is very different from what I want from black metal.

The Christian song that has stood the test of time for me is Artificial Immortality by Becoming the Archetype. It has everything, melodic Maidenesque leads, blast beats, powerful guttural vocals, a nice grinding riff in middle and a blazing solo to lead out. The problem is, on the album it flows directly into Self Existent. If I were on a desert island it would drive me nuts to not here that intro immediately after.

If it's not that, its probably As The World Lies Bleeding by Theocracy.

Honorable mentions "The Price of Agony" by Fit for a King and Ineluctable Castigation by Death Requisite. Not even my favorite bands but these songs are so great!


Ultimately, I'm a big fan of aggressive transitions in songs where killer riff follows killer riff, with big solos ripping throughout without losing momentum. That's why the two above tracks are big favorites and tracks like Megadeth's "The Conjuring" & "Holy Wars," Helloween "Halloween" & "Revelation," King Diamond "The Invisible Guests," Savatage "The Unholy" &"Agony and Ecstasy," Gamma Ray "Into the Black Hole," Blind Guardian "The Curse of Feanor" and a host of other legendary tracks are big on my love list.

Not as many Christian bands doing that like my favorite secular bands of old (many of which are listed above).

Well, there's this little song called "Painkiller"..

There's also "Hall of the Mountain King" and "Soldiers Under Command"

Plus Fates Warning "A Pleasant Shade of Grey Pt. XI" (live version) and "Through Eyes of Glass" by Forbidden

Can't go wrong with "Weapons of Our Warfare," "Behind Enemy Lines," and "Theodicy of Trial" either

As well as "Eternal World" by Crimson Glory and "Kiss of Death" by Dokken

And I really love "It's All Come True" by Barren Cross, it's so freaking metal I can smell the smoldering of smelted steel.  And you gotta love "Dangerous Love" by Racer X too.

And in more recent years there's been "Worlds Are Coming Through" by Brainstorm, "Mission Profile" by Threshold, and "Building the Towers" by Halcyon Way
