Best 1990s thrash release
Best 1990 thrash album
(Now, I know Pantera is more or less considered Groove Metal, but they have enough thrash elements for them to qualify, at least on those early 90s albums).

Same.
Megadeth, Testament and Annihilator are very close behind though.
Forbidden's "Twisted Into Form" was also killer!
LOTS of excellent thrash/speed stuff that year.

Leaving aside Christian picks—namely, Stop the Bleeding and Weapons of Our Warfare, I’d rank my top 5:
Rust in Peace
Persistence of Time
Seasons in the Abyss
Never Neverland
Impact Is Imminent

I'd toss Seasons and put in Souls of Black as the only change.Pethead wrote:This is brutal.

Re: Best 1990 thrash album
I mainly like his higher and mid range vocals on the first two TQT albums. I don’t think I’ve heard anything like that anywhere else, and I think it sounds great. Certainly better than the generic shouting/barking vocals you hear on a lot of thrash (even on some Tourniquet, such as most of POD), and even among more melodic thrash I think he stands out above the restPethead wrote:I must confess that, while I like Guy and I LOVE TQT, I’ve never been head over heels for Guy’s voice. He’s good to be sure, but I’d take Joey Belladonna, Coburn Pharr, Chuck Billy, Blitz Ellsworth, Jimmy P. Brown II, Luke Easter, and Russ Anderson over him, to name a few.

I like his lower register vocals he uses on POD (e.g. the bridge of the title track).
My favorite of his vocals might be on Flood's album, at least next to some of the stuff on StB.

Same. I’ve only heard one Pantera song I even remotely liked, and that is Cemetery Gates. Which sounds a lot different than any other of their songs I’ve heard, almost like it’s not even the same bandPethead wrote:Another confession: I've never been big on Pantera. I like some of their stuff and I love Dime's playing, but their music hasn't ever grabbed me like it has other people. I haven't really delved into their pre-CfH stuff, though.

Re: Best 1990 thrash album
I had to go with Slayer. Seasons is awesome!
My other choices would be…
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Suicidal Tendencies - Lights Camera Revolution
Anthrax - Persistence of Time
Honorable mention to Souls of Black by Testament. It was my first album of theirs, and Alex Skolnick is one of the best lead players. I just think the overall mix is rushed… while I like the reverb on the solos, the rhythm guitar sounds not as solid as it could’ve been. But it’s still great! Really dark and eerie.

Re: Best 1990 thrash album
Early to mid 90s was the golden age of skateboarding
Early 90s the golden age of heavy metal and thrash
Mid 90s the golden age of hip hop
Then you had Nirvana with Nevermind and RATM with their s/t single handedly inventing new genres
In electronica, the whole jungle / drum and bass movement was revolutionary as well
so much groundbreaking stuff was happening, and almost all at the same time...
But to answer the question: TQT StB and Deliverance WooW certainly take the cake in Christian Metal. I haven't listened to any of the secular records in the poll (I was strictly Christian music at that time) but later certainly enjoyed Suicidal, Lights Camera Revolution, with You Can't Bring Me Down one of my all time favorite metal tunes.
