Sacrament or The Crucified?
Re: Sacrament or The Crucified?
It’s crazy how a guy as old as Bruce Dickinson can still run around those huge stadium stages and put on such a great show.
They may not play anything like Holy Wars… but those guys give it their all!

Doom metal band members should be able to pull off some breakdancing on stage or leap off the stacks while high-kicking like David Lee Roth.
That would be hilarious.

I guess you’ve never seen Janick Gers perform. LOL!
Also Steve Harris moves around a decent amount.

I’d rather them levitate. Floating on a perfect sonic wave of doom riffs.

Just for the heck of it, I’ll throw out another guy that gets around the stage with lots of energy:
Frank Bello from Anthrax.

Sacrament is ok but I do have an issue with the vocals, they seem to be all over the place from shouting to screaming to those strange lengthened death growls sometimes at the end of a bar.
Same!

I'm going to make some enemies right now:
I owned Pillars of Humanity back in the day... .until I realized The Crucified are a One Song Wonder...
Mindbender is one of the greatest metal tunes ever, but somehow everything else leaves me... meh...

Please tell me this is a joke from your standup routine!
I wouldn’t want to be enemies, but I’m genuinely shocked you like only one song! The album is very consistent (no filler in my opinion). But I agree Mindbender is great!
Intro/Hateworld is my personal favorite. It’s a mosh pit igniter!
With crossover thrash, most either love it (or don’t get it).
Pillars is geared towards people that would listen to CFH era Pantera, Suicidal Tendencies and Sacred Reich.

I think I don't like crossover thrash... except whatever Mindbnder is.
I do like Uncle Slam.

Mindbender is crossover thrash mixed with groove.
To me it sounds similar to that amazing breakdown riff on Pantera’s This Love. Totally infectious and outside the box!

Not all crossover thrash is alike. Only Suicidal Tendencies is crossover in that list above. There aren't very many bands that could pull it off. I've never heard anybody that sounded like Pillars, mainly due to Mark's unique vocals.

Of course not all crossover thrash is alike, but yes all the bands mentioned are crossover. Have you heard Uncle Slam’s Say Uncle album? It’s a crossover masterpiece! And a direct extension of the Venice punk/crossover scene. Several former ST members were in the band as well… Uncle Slam has always been labeled crossover. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_Slam
As far as Mark Salomon’s voice (with the Crucified)…
It’s true that his voice is unique, but Phil Rind from Sacred Reich has a similar vocal tone and cadence when he sings. If you aren’t aware, Sacred Reich dabbled with crossover too. Especially on their first two releases, Ignorance and Surf Nicaragua.

Re: Sacrament or The Crucified?
The closest album in style and sound to Pillars of Humanity is The American Way by Sacred Reich.
Not exactly the same! But in the same ball park. You can still hear the crossover elements, but they were leaning way more into the thrash side of things.

Listen to the “mosh groove” of Death Squad… it’s similar to what the Crucified did on Pillars for “Intro”. And both bands were obviously influenced by SOD.

Re: Sacrament or The Crucified?
I can see why people would think those few songs by Sacred Reich are similar and could be called crossover, but they're more straight up thrash to me. As is the rest of their catalog. I hadn't listened to them since the early 90s, so I had to go back and check them out again. It just sounds like thrash to me. Too heavy, no 80s hardcore influence. It doesn't fit with D.R.I., Cro-Mags, The Exploited, early C.O.C., Suicidal, etc.
I also don't hear any similarities in the vocals. Mark can actually sing and has a personality and musicality, whereas the Sacred Reich guy is just yelling without any nuance at all. But hey, everybody's ears are different.
I didn't mean Uncle Slam isn't crossover. Sorry for the confusion. I meant Pantera and Sacred Reich (who aren't aside from a few parts of a few songs).

Re: Sacrament or The Crucified?
I think we’ll have to agree to disagree.
Mark Salomon didn’t “sing” in the Crucified. He shouted. The only time he came close to singing is on the song “Confidence”, and that weird part on Fellowship of Thieves. Don’t confuse what he did in Stavesacre with the Crucified. He didn’t start actually singing until Stavesacre.
This is not my idea of just shouting in a mic… it’s more like “yellody” as in: yelling with melody.
So on what song does Mark Salomon sing with the Crucified? I gave two examples, but it’s not really what I would call singing. On the Confidence song, he yells in a way that resembles singing, but not really.

Re: Sacrament or The Crucified?
I’m baffled that you can’t hear the punk and hardcore influence with Sacred Reich..
They had that obvious punk style barre chord structure in their rhythm. No different that Suicidal. They had the rapid fire vocals like other crossover bands (mainly the early stuff). There is three albums where Suicidal was full blown thrash. Every band has had phases of change. After Pepper joined COC, they turned into a southern fried Metallica.
I know the difference between regular thrash and crossover. I’ve been a fan of both since 1990.
But you’re right… everyone’s ears are different.

I know I’m not alone calling Sacred Reich crossover thrash.

There are moments, and definitely some people call them that. I just don't hear enough to warrant the label, that's all. Ears are ears! Not a big deal.TZ75 wrote:I know I’m not alone calling Sacred Reich crossover thrash.
