Also turns out that apparently this album has Jeff Lewis on lead guitar who is one of those underappreciated guitarists out there. He only did one album with Mortification (Relentless) but he might be my favorite Mortification guitarist.

Bruce Fitzhugh is my favorite. I also like Jason Wisdom and Ryan Clark. Probably Brook Reeves, too.

I'll tell you, my least favorite types of harsh vocals are the whiny kind like Oh, Sleeper and Silent Planet. Also not a fan of Ultimatum's vocals.

Steve Rowe on the first three Mort albums.

Adam Cook on the first three from A Hill to Die Upon.

Roger Martinez on Released Upon the Earth.

I also love Martinez’s vocals on Destruction Comes. I’m not sure if it’s harsh… but it’s insane (in a good way)!

Also a shout out to Kevin Tubby’s vocals on the Deathlist album “Severed”. He’s currently in the band Broken Flesh.

I’m not a big fan of the metal-core barking style of Demon Hunter or most of the stuff Living Sacrifice has done with Bruce. They sound too forced and strained. Although I do like the music. And Ryan Clark has a nice melodic singing voice.

Defining harsh is also debatable… some might say Guy Ritter’s vocals on STB are “harsh”. LOL

Jani Stefanivic from Renascent and Divinefire is pretty underrated. His work in both has aome my favorite moments. Peter Espevoll of Extol too. Not seeing him mentioned much.

Renascent is Eero Tertsunen.

My favorites are Luke Renno on Unearthed and Steve Rowe on the first two Mortification albums. Ronny Hansen on the Vaakevandring EP is a favorite for Black Metal.

My non-Christian choices would be:

Testament - Chuck Billy's death/gutteral style.

Opeth - Mikael Akerfeldt from about 2001 to 2008 or so.

Morbid Angel - David Vincent on the album "Covenant"

Fear Factory - Burton C. Bell on "Soul Of A New Machine"

Mortification--s/t

Vengeance Rising--Human Sacrifice, Once Dead, and Released Upon the Earth

Pantokrator--all but the last one really stood out

Zao--Where Blood & Fire Bring Rest to present (although no longer xian)

Extol--Undeceived (the harsh ones; not the clean)

Believer--Sanity Obscure

Living Sacrifice--all except for Inhabit

Honcho, you're late to the party! I started this thread b/c so many people were criticizing Vengeance's vocals and LS's early albums (except s/t). I've always liked them. So I've been sampling some of the top albums recommended in this thread.

I’m not too sure they qualify as “harsh”, but Kurt Bachman and Gary Lenaire have very cool shouting voices.

yeah yeah, i thought of it as deep in a lonely dungeon amidst winter hills. Truely tortured! Just relized i spelt wrong its Agathothodion.

It depends on my mood. Sometimes I think they sound terrible, sometimes it adds to the mood and makes it feel more crazy.
