This is a very true statement.

I love progressive metal but a lot of bands seem to make long epics for the sake of being long.

Dream Theater was an exception up until Portnoy left, as he had a huge role in arranging their songs. It only took me 2 or 3 listens for even their most lengthy pieces to sink in. Nowadays, not so much. Still a really good band, but they're no longer one of my top favorites.
