Favorite Star Trek show?
Re: Favorite Star Trek Show
New Creation wrote:TOS by far followed closely by TNG.
I am very excited about the upcoming Worf series.
That was merely speculation and rumor. There is no upcoming Worf series.
The NEW series that IS coming is called Star Trek: Discovery. It will be on CBS Prime only. It is also going to be another prequel series building up to the original series with some story lines. However, the makers have said they were really going to push things sexually and even refer to the show as Star Trek: STD. Knowing this and that they are going to have an openly homosexual character, I don't know if I want to see this or not.

^Yeah, it's pretty lame when a famous franchise is being used to push a political agenda.
However, it is possible to enjoy entertainment without letting this agenda-pushing influence you. The feminist propaganda in Frozen went entirely over my head, and it will stay that way.

Star Trek is very much about political agendas, just about every episode has an underlying political/social commentaryAndreas89 wrote:^Yeah, it's pretty lame when a famous franchise is being used to push a political agenda.

Indeed. If I did a drinking game where I had to do a shot everytime Deanna Troi said something stupid, I'd be in rehab now.

Re: Favorite Star Trek Show
Never saw the cartoon, so I can't comment on that.
The original series was a lot of fun. Love the characters in that one.
TNG is definitely my favorite, by far. In fact, I'd say it's my favorite sci-fi show.
Voyager ..... liked some of the characters on this one, but I never could get into the show itself for some reason.
DS9 ..... Didn't care for it. Not awful, but definitely not good either. I think of it as a poor man's Babylon 5.
Enterprise was just plain bad.
I don't like the sound of this either. Regarding the gay character, I could let that slide, but if they're really pushing the sex angle and it ends up a tasteless, Game of Thrones in space kind of thing, I'm definitely not interested.

Re: Favorite Star Trek Show
My order:
DS9
Sisko’s odd acting in the early episodes turned me off, but once I got to know the characters and got into the overarching plots it became my favorite. Seasons 5–7 are as good as Trek gets, and the recurring characters are mostly fantastic. I also loved how this was a darker show with flawed characters, yet never collapsed into nihilism. Favorite episode: In Purgatory’s Shadow/By Inferno’s Light
TOS
I actually got into this one first. The big 3 have an unbeatable chemistry, and I also really like Scotty. Kirk is by far my favorite Captain. The first two seasons are mostly excellent. Favorite episode: Balance of Terror
TNG
The first season is just painful. But season 2 is a marked improvement, and seasons 3–6 are great. I find the show can have some of the worst clunkers but also some of the best episodes among the series. So far this is the only series I’ve gotten my wife into.
Favorite episode: The Best of Both Worlds
Voyager
I enjoyed this a lot my first time through, but the flaws became more apparent during rewatches. I do enjoy it. It’s kinda like comfort Trek. They really underutilized their characters except for Janeway, The Doctor, and Seven (who overcame her cynical casting choice to become a great character).
Favorite episode: Year of Hell
Enterprise
At its best (seasons 3&4) it was better than Voyager. But at its worst it was worse. Very inconsistent, but I really like the arc of season 3 and they probably did action sequences better than any of the other series. I was not a fan of the increased sexuality present. Morally speaking, “Dear Doctor” is probably the most abhorrent in all Trek.
Favorite episode: hard to say, but probably one of the last ones in season 3 as the arc ramps up and concludes.

Re: Favorite Star Trek Show
I'm still in Season 2 of TNG, but I've seen parts of other shows and I think DS9 is my favorite.

1. TNG
2. TOS
Never watched much of the others.
I actually prefer the original cast movies over any of the series, though.

They all had their good and bad points and I liked them all to one degree or other.
I think Deep Space Nine had the most sophisticated writing and plots, but my favorite goes to Voyager for the memorable, quirky, and likeable characters.

Space-babe rank:
Uhura
7 of 9 (Wife thinks she's ugly! Just jealous I'd smother her for even one chaste evening with Ryan!)
Dr. Crusher (Troi overrated!)
Dax
T'Pol (actress had no idea how to play a Vulcan).

Re: Favorite Star Trek Show
This list needs updating as we now have Discovery, Strange New Worlds, and Lower Decks, too.
Re: Favorite Star Trek Show
I have theory that if more people had color TV's in the 60's then Trek would have caught on to a greater degree. Then the show would have been renewed and with a higher budget leading to another several years of TOS. The show is half spectacle and if you can't experience it in its full glory then it will lose its impact. Seeing Trek in B&W is like watching Twilight zone without a Rod Serling intro. And tells you how good the writing was to get the amount we have.

Re: Favorite Star Trek Show
Just watched TNG episodes Contagion and Night Terrors. Contagion is a great mystery episode up until the resolution which feels extremely rushed and anti-climatic, looking like they had budget constraints blowing up the ancient base. Night Terrors keeps you guessing the whole time, but Troi's repetitive dream does get pretty annoying the 4th time around... Briefly scanned Galaxy's Child and reminded myself not to see that cringe-fest again. When TNG is bad, it's real bad.

TNG is weird because it probably has the highest highs and lowest lows of Trek. Most of the other shows were more consistent, even if they didn’t hit as high of highs (e.g. Voyager).

Yeah, it's hard to think that Best of Both Worlds and The Inner Light are in the same series as Sub Rosa.Pethead wrote:TNG is weird because it probably has the highest highs and lowest lows of Trek.
