Songs with lyrics that sound bad outside of context
Metallica's "Judas Kiss" is obviously sung in character from whatever you want it to be about (fear, addiction, or the devil himself) but out of context the chorus sounds very questionable

Hmm... Master Of Puppets. Great song with a great message, but if you don't know the message it sounds a little... uh.... yeah.

Nice to see Judas Kiss getting talked about more. if you change a couple words the song could be fully Christian(lots of other 'Tallica songs too). But JK(lol) is one of my favorite songs on DM.StevenCressler wrote:Metallica's "Judas Kiss" is obviously sung in character from whatever you want it to be about (fear, addiction, or the devil himself) but out of context the chorus sounds very questionable

I heard in a YT comment that a dudes friend's mom was Christian and didn't want him listening to it bc she thought it was about devil worship, so the dude explained to her the meaning of every track and she let him keep itChristian Thrash Rules wrote:Hmm... Same, great riff and chorus, and that one moment where the solo starts... Idk, bubbling up? Did you know what part I mean? Is great.Christian Thrash Rules wrote:Nice to see Judas Kiss getting talked about more. if you change a couple words the song could be fully Christian(lots of other 'Tallica songs too). I mean the moment the solo fully kicks in I'll try to timestamp it layerChristian Thrash Rules wrote:The build up?StevenCressler wrote:Same, great riff and chorus, and that one moment where the solo starts... System of a Down - DDevil
The song is about the tentative allure of harmful things... And the main repeated line is "the devil is so lovely"

Not metal, but there are some Steve Taylor songs that qualify.

Another Metallica one... Rebel of Babylon. Some of the metaphors make it sound like he's making fun of Jesus if you don't know it's about Layne Staley. (Even as it is some of the metaphors I'm not comfortable with and brings the song down a little)

Reminds me of my own upcoming song "Those Stupid Christians"... I'll look up that song, but I'm guessing it's like mine where it's challenging the notion that Christians are dumb/losers?Pethead wrote:WildWorld wrote:Not metal, but there are some Steve Taylor songs that qualify.

Re: Songs with lyrics that sound bad outside of context
It’s more about how we’re all losers and need Jesus and how we must recognize our need.

That's an even better usage of that title than what I thought lolPethead wrote:It’s more about how we’re all losers and need Jesus and how we must recognize our need.

I highly recommend classic Steve Taylor. I’d start with the album that song comes from, Squint. After all, the opening lyric of the album is “The news of my impending death came at a really bad time for me.”

The more I hear about this guy the more I realize his lyrics sound brilliant. I'll definitely check out that album soon.Pethead wrote:I highly recommend classic Steve Taylor. He cowrote a lot of classic 90s Newsboys stuff, too.

I Love Squint! His first LP the lyrics are even more raw. Very Alice Cooper-like IMO.
Two days ago at work for some reason "You'll only drink milk from a Christian cow" came into my head.

He was on fire on all his 80s solo stuff and Squint. I enjoyed Goliath and Chagall Guevara musically, but not as much lyrically.

Can't believe I didn't think of this song at first seeing the thread title, but Hide The Beer The Pastors Here by Swirling Eddies.
