Good DM is not just aggression. It’s got riffs, hooks, grooves, speed, doomy moments, all sorts of elements. But the main thing is that I find good DM to have far better songwriting than the vast majority of metalcore.
What album did you have? The album Fight The Silence is kinda how you're describing DM minus the doomy moments.
I think it was Immortal.
For Today is the album after that. It's not like other metalcore. You should at least try it, especially the title track

I might well have heard it. I’ve known people who loved For Today. But I’ve heard a ton of metalcore over the years and I would’ve been the target audience—all but one of my friends in college who were into heavier music pretty much only liked metalcore. The vocalist for the band I was in was a metalcore nut. I played shows with metalcore bands—mostly local, although Bloodlined Calligraphy was more well-known in those days. But I never cared for the vast majority of the genre.

But I’ll give the album/song a spin.

I know I’ve said this before, but even as a core-hater there is one band with core influences I actually really like, A Secret Ending. I’ve seen it described as symphonic deathcore (the “symphonic” part just refers to synths though), but I’d say there’s some elements of thrash as well. Pretty simplistic musically compared to most everything else I listen to, but I find it really fun and energetic

They’re kinda unique from what I’ve heard.

There are other bands I like that have core elements, but they’re not straightforward core (e.g. Becoming the Archetype).

I listened to the first 3 tracks. It’s fine, and I probably prefer it over Immortal, but it still sounds like generic metalcore to me.

Metal, but the exact style depended on who wrote the song. The guitarist wrote more core-style; I wrote more thrash/death. Our vocalist had a lot of input and added more core elements.

I can handle some core, mostly death core like After the Burial or Impending Doom or bands that mix it in but don't live there like BtA and DH.

I like bands in all of the styles except Easycore, and hardly any in Prog/Power.  So I'd rank all the rest equally.

My favorite Christian bands tend to be mostly '89-93 thrash, though, because Christian metal hasn't produced as many top tier bands in other metal genres.

As for metalcore, I agree that it sounds mostly monotonous other than a few bands.  But I'm on quite a few boards and FB groups that can discuss metalcore bands with as much detail and opinion as we do here for older styles.  So I think it's actually just a generational hearing thing.  What you're into, you can hear the nuances of.  What you aren't into, you can't.

I don't know why people hate on easycore. The people that hate on it are also the people that hate on metalcore and they think it's the same thing but it's not. Easycore is much more Pop Punky than metalcore. There's less breakdowns, cool riffs, catchy choruses, and good clean vocals as well as growling vocals. At least everything I've heard I'm not sure about other bands than the ones I've heard. Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! is top of top tier easycore. At The Wayside is a good Christian easycore band, not as heavy as CNCC though.
