I totally forgot to include glam on my ranking. Musically it's in between a and b tier, everything else about it is cheesy af and f tier.

You know CW, I saw your post about listening to Iron Maiden in the other section and thought to myself, "CW's a pretty swell fella."  But now I see that you rank doom and deathcore the same and I take it all back.  Shame shame!   Razz

I'll do a full ranking later. For now I'll just say that thrash is the peak of music

Hard to rank genres, since within each genre there’s usually a wide variety of quality. So I’ll rank by the best examples I’ve heard from each genre:
S: Hybrid/“quirky” melodic thrash, prog power, whatever Epta Astera is
A: Standard power metal, traditional metal, melodic death, epic doom, operatic symphonic metal
B: Melodic black, standard melodic thrash, prog metal, standard doom, folk metal
C: Nu-metal, glam metal
D: Thrash with only monotonous barking vocals
E: Traditional death metal, non-melodic black metal, most “core”
F: Grindcore, “brutal” death metal, anything with “noise” in the genre name

That's more it, but people think metal and Satanism are the same thing so if a band about Satanism has electric guitars people will call it metal

Stevie T calls it metal. That's good enough for me. They also toured with Metallica on the Worldwired tour.

Back in my early college days it was harder to get a hold of classic Christian metal, and there weren’t very many modern bands playing the old styles. Instead, Christian metalcore was all the rage.

I was desperate for heavy music and I only listened to Christian music.

I tried to like metalcore. I really did. But with only a few exceptions—primarily Demon Hunter—I just never got the appeal. I still don’t. Metalcore to me is the clearest proof that aggression alone doesn’t make for quality music.

Have you listened to For Today? Also, Death Metal is just pure aggression.

I have, even have one of their albums somewhere. Can’t stand them. Other than their lyrics there’s nothing about their stuff I find likable. The album I had was just yelling over monotonous breakdowns.

Good DM is not just aggression. It’s got riffs, hooks, grooves, speed, doomy moments, all sorts of elements. But the main thing is that I find good DM to have far better songwriting than the vast majority of metalcore.

Metalcore is basically 75% screaming over monotonous chugging guitars, 25% whiny, emo-like choruses that sound like they belong in a Linkin Park song

What album did you have? The album Fight The Silence is kinda how you're describing DM minus the doomy moments.

It’s kind of hard to rank whole genres or sub-genres because there are good and bad bands within all of them.

I tend to like Thrash and Classic Metal the best.

Nu-metal is my least favorite.

I used to like a lot of “core” bands 20 years ago. But now most of them are annoying to me.

I went to see Fit For A King and The Devil Wears Prada a few weeks ago with some friends from church.  Not my scene, but it was good spending time with some church fellas and see Hardcore Christian there too.  But I was really surprised at just how many breakdowns (FFAK particularly) there were.  Like, multiple ones per song.  As soon as they got into a nice groove, it'd get interrupted with yet another breakdown - totally breaking [down, haha] the momentum of the song.  I know breakdowns are one of the distinguishing characteristics of metalcore, but dang guys, take it a little easier!

I totally agree with you on the vocals.  The typical metalcore cleans are so wimpy sounding - but also especially bland and generic.  Imagine a metalcore band but the cleans sung by the likes of Bruce Dickinson or Dio.  That might actually be pretty cool...
