Re: Vinyl
Sometimes filler is filler, but often filler is just "filler" compared to the standout tracks. I hope artists don't generally go into an album with the plan of 8 good songs and 3-4 filler tracks.
Also, to the original point of this thread if we're paying $50 for vinyl or $20 for a CD more songs are a better value. 8 songs on a $20 CD are $2.50 per song. 15 songs on a $20 CD are $0.75 per song.

My exact reaction yesterday when I $tumbled upon the latest from Les Carlsen.

Thank God I am no longer a collector of vinyl. This is for the elite with a great sound $ystem. Back in the day, vinyl was the only way. Then came portable music (8-tracks/cassette and this new glorious invention called the compact disc).

Y’all must love grindcore with its albums of 30+ songs.rtz wrote:THIS!eatbugs wrote:Sometimes filler is filler, but often filler is just "filler" compared to the standout tracks. I hope artists don't generally go into an album with the plan of 8 good songs and 3-4 filler tracks.

For me an album is more than a collection of songs. I don’t like to skip tracks. I like to appreciate it as a whole, which means that I care less about the amount and more about the quality.

Great point.
I've probably gotten $50 worth of enjoyment out of some of my favorite songs ever and $.05 out of another. Treating all songs as being of the same worth and simply "wanting more" doesn't make any sense to me.
I want artists to spend time on their songs and get them right (as best as they can) so they can create something lasting. Very, very few songs are lasting these days for many reasons.
