Not a huge Megadeth or Metallica fan these days but at one point or another along the way, probably like most here, they would've been a favorite band for sure. So for me it's hands down 80's Megadeth.
Peace sells and SFSGSW are my first equal favs then RIP (yes I know it's 1990 but it's my party and I'll cry if I want to). For me they'll never top those albums.
Still like some of their 90's efforts though and also like Dystopia.

Re: 80s vs 90s Megadeth
In the 90s I got less and less interested in this band and more into obscure thrash, classic heavy metal, and death metal.

But if we change the question to: 80’s vs 00’s, what would you say?

80s still, no question. Not even a contest. They only put out 2 good albums in the 00s, and 2 relatively crappy ones.
But even Megadeth's worst decade is better than what Metallica did after the 80s. That band has been pathetic for a long, long time. Where would they have been without riffs from Mustaine, Burton, and Newsted?

All three virtually non-existent on AJFA

Obviously, Torn Flesh owns both of them.

Newsted wrote the main riff to the first song on the album. Most likely the best single riff on the entire album.
AJFA has some clunkers on it too, like Eye of the Beholder and the title track. Mustaine's songs were better than those.
I think it's undeniable that Het was influenced by Dave's style while he was in the band.

Agreed. Except for the Torn Flesh part (deleted that).

I don’t think average Metallica is better than average Deth. But I like it better.

When it comes to the technical guitar skills, RiP is better. When it comes to how good the songs actually are, MoP and AJFA are betterBlack Rider wrote:Peak Metallica doesn't touch RIP.

Lars follows trends and put the kibosh on Kirk's solos on St. Anger.TZ75 wrote:To be fair… Hetfield had disagreed with a lot of Lars Ulrich’s ideas. He’s quoted in interviews to not like some of the directions the band went during the Load years. But he obviously gave in and also let his “outlaw country” influences infiltrate their metal sound.

Disagree. Lucretia and other deep tracks are equally as good if not better than obscure songs on Met's classic albums. It might all depend on single string riffing vs. chord riffage. Ranking these three probably relies on your preference whether if you like single string riffs or chordal riffing.StevenCressler wrote:When it comes to the technical guitar skills, RiP is better. I can go either way, but I rank them RIP, AJFA, then MoP. RIP has the most variety and Friedman >>>> Hammett.

At the end of the day a lot of it is subjective.Superjuice wrote:Disagree. Lucretia and other deep tracks are equally as good if not better than obscure songs on Met's classic albums.
