Who loves "A Christmas Story"?
My family are huge fans of the movie "A Christmas Story". You know the one: its about a kid dreaming of getting a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas. The movie reminds me of growing up in a more rural town and looking forward (and now nostalgically) to getting my first BB gun for Christmas as well.
I did this tribute to the movie and put it on the blues album I did this year. Please take the time to watch it. Perhaps this will get you to pull out the DVD or Blu-Ray and watch this film yet again.

Yes, we love this movie and have watched it for so very many years now. It's hard to believe, but we still show this movie sometimes to people who have not seen it! I own it on VHS and DVD. Would like to upgrade to Blu-ray someday.

Fantastic film, and I also really dig your video (very clever song).
Now the sequel to the film I didn't like nearly as much as the original.

I like it but it's not nostalgic/iconic Christmas to me. I saw it for the first time as an adult about 5 years ago.

I can understand that for sure. I like the sequel, but in some ways it felt more like a different story that was just doing a tip of the hat to the original. Having different cast members did affect my enjoyment of it a little, too. The mom and dad in the original would be hard to beat.
Re: Who loves "A Christmas Story"?
I enjoy this movie. It's pretty much a staple here in NE Ohio. I work just a few blocks from the actual house. And, a co-worker is friends with the owner, so I get Christmas Story House talk year round'.
I have taken pics outside the house, but they look just like the website, so no need to post them....
We watch this movie at least once a season.
On a side note, the mom, Melinda Dillon, played in a movie, with Martin Sheen, Shattered Spirits. Martin Sheen is the alcoholic dad and she is the wife. We used to show this movie when I worked in rehab. But, imo, she was Great as the pathetic enabler....And Darren McGavin, he made "Billy Madison" believable.
Enjoy!!

I can't throw them. I finally watched Princess Bride this year.
A Christmas Story is very nostalgic for me. My brother got into the habit of showing this in the background while my family gets together for Christmas. I had not seen it until then (probably back around 2000-2001). While it takes place in the 40s, it still reminds me of life in rural Tennessee when I was Ralphie's age back in the 70s. I still remember getting my first BB gun (a Daisy). We did not, however, shoot our eyes out. We would later have fights with those BB guns as teenagers and actually shoot one another--for fun. What a bunch of country bumpkin rednecks!!! LOL

I had gathered up the remaining stones that were left over after the "Princess Bride" scandal recently, but upon reading your "kidding", they have been safely returned to the woodshed out back.

I saw part of it on TV many years ago. It didn't make a lasting impression, and I think I probably ended up changing the channel. Maybe I should give it another chance though, since so many people love it.

I, too, cannot stand Elf. I don't like anything with Will Ferrell in it. To me, he is the most non-funny comedy guy I have ever heard.

It isn't for everyone. It is a quirky film. Most people who do love it probably saw it in their younger years. I was an exception but got into it due to the nostalgic feelings it brought up for me. Some movies just don't tickle the ol' funny bone like others do. As I stated in my recent rant against Princess Bride, I also don't like O, Brother, Where Art Thou?. My tastes in movies will be different than someone else's. Mine may even be defective as I actually enjoyed this year's reboot of Ghostbusters. There has to be something wrong with me!

I'm 52 years old and I am proud (probably in a sinful way ) that I have never seen E.T. and Titanic.
On a Christmas note, I don't watch It's a Wonderful Life....haven't seen it in its entirety, ever.

Titanic I can relate. Who really wants that crappy, sappy love story? Just sink the dang boat!
You've really never seen E.T.--The Extra Testical? Now that's surprising. It was actually a good story.
No love for It's A Wonderful Life? That's a classic. I didn't watch it until in my early 30s, but it too has a good story. I would imagine that if they ever remake it that it would be a much darker film.

I watched It's a Wonderful life for the first time a few years back and was very pleasantly surprised. It was more serious and less sappy and cloying than what I was expecting. It's a good film. And yes, I can certainly picture someone doing a darker remake of it.

And surprisingly I haven't seen It's A Wonderful Life either, I watch a lot of older movies and I do not remember seeing it.
The one thing I can not get over is how Avatar of (all movies!!!!!!!!!) is the highest grossing of all time!
(Of course not counting inflation)
It honestly makes me mad because its just a average sci-fi story and isn't that special.

Re: Who loves "A Christmas Story"?
I can say that this is one of my all time favorite movies. I first saw it in the 80's. Have seen it every year since. We are such fans of the movie that 2 years ago we drove from Florida to see the house.
Here is a video I made outside : https://vimeo.com/117379899
It was a very fun trip. All of us love the movie and enjoyed seeing the house and taking the tour. I haven't seen the sequel and probably won't. But there IS another "real" sequel to it called "My Summer Story". That movie is also directed by Bob Clark and narrated by Jean Shepard. In fact it was supposed to be filmed directly after the original but wasn't filmed until 10 years later. The roles were recast except for Miss Shields (the teacher). Not near as good as the first but it is also a very good movie shot in the exact same location.

My Summer Story had the original title of "It Runs In The Family". If you are curious you can see it here (before it gets removed).

Those are Great pics MikeInFLa!!!
Were you surprised how narrow the street was? It's as narrow as many one-ways. I see your pic, from outside was in the yard across the street, the Museum. Did you go into the Museum? And, 2 years ago, that was a Lousy winter, you were brave.

Re: Who loves "A Christmas Story"?
Yeah, it is pretty small! We parked on the street. The "Bumpus House" charges 5 bucks for parking, NO WAY! So we parked in the street. We went in the museum and the gift shop. Was a very fun trip, we enjoyed every minute of it. Have tons of more pictures. The interior of the house is a bit different from the movie. For example, from the bathroom you cannot see the phone on the wall. The bathroom is in a different part. And the kitchen was a bit different but for a lot of the interior scenes they used a soundstage. My videos on vimeo show a bit of what we saw.L8T wrote:Those are Great pics MikeInFLa!!!
