HARD ROCK VS HEAVY METAL
To me hard rock is bands like Daniel Band, Petra, Billy Squire, triumph and Rush and might even include up to AC/DC, van Halen (especially the hagar era) and Idle Cure...
Metal is Stryper, Deliverance, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saint, etc. ...
What do you guys think?

Same. I always shake my head in wonderment when someone calls Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin metal. And I about passed out the year Jethro Tull got the grammy for metal album of the year.

I see bands like Petra, Bleach and R.E.M. as rock bands. Shout, KISS or Bon Jovi and the like as hard rock and Judas Priest, Megadeth, Vomitorial Corpulance etc as Heavy Metal.

Re: HARD ROCK VS HEAVY METAL
Back in the heyday of Hit Parader and Circus magazine, bands like Zeppelin, KISS, and even Aerosmith were considered metal. I will take the word of the industry at the time. To me, this just becomes revisionist history as we try to recategorize due to more extreme forms of metal evolving with time.
For me, if it jams, it jams.

I agree with Savage. Bands like Daniel Band, some Petra, Idle Cure, some Rez, some John Elefante and MasteDon are definitely hard rock. Bands like Stryper, Saint, Barren Cross, Deliverance, etc are metal. Some bands are a mixture of rock/hard rock or hard rock/metal lIke Petra, Stryper, Rez, and Jerusalem, depending what album you are referring to or period of the band's history.

There's some truth to that, but even in the early to mid 80s I was listening to Saint and Stryper, and MTV had Headbangers' Ball, and I still heard people presumably from the industry calling bands like Pink Floyd heavy metal. Those same people would then turn around and call Van Halen, KISS, and the Scorpions metal. I have NEVER heard anything from Pink Floyd that is even close to what we call metal today, nor anything close to the type of music Van Halen and KISS put out. Pink Floyd, to me, was always a more psychedelic version of Yes, more progressive rock than anything else. The same for Led Zeppelin. And Jethro Tull? Metal album of the year!?
This is why I hate genresizing! Like you said, alldat ... if it jams, it jams.

I just want to know where along the line the industry decided Meat Loaf was metal..they have a metal album cover but they are not metal...
if i remember right metallica, guns n roses and ac/dc were all up for that award that year...

Actually, i saw an interview with a member of Stryper where they said that "to us, Iron Maiden is metal, we're not". Another interview they described themselves as "hard rock Journey". Of course, when it comes to the "hair bands", it should be considered that the pre-86 stuff (dokken, ratt, quiet riot, old def leppard, and early stryper) was a lot heavier than the 87-93 era stuff (poison, bon jovi, later Europe, later def leppard, and of course later stryper).

Agree with SA. And honestly, I have NEVER heard anyone refer to Floyd as metal. Ever, until this thread.
Speaking of Floyd, that reminded me several years ago here on the CMR someone posted a YouTube video that had a band that sounded just like Floyd. It was a newer band and they were doing that style of music, reminded me of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" era Floyd. Anyone know what that is? I would love to hear that band again but for the life of me I cannot remember who they were and cannot find the videos on YouTube.

Vomitorial Corpulence isn't heavy metal bro.

I have never heard anyone called Pink Floyd metal. However a lot of metal heads listen to it as a mellow alternative. I have heard early Kings'x labeled as a glam band. That is as bad as calling Pink Floyd metal!

Yep I know awesome band. I put them in there as an example of something that defiantly isn't rock or hard rock. Really would be great if some more VC tunes turned up one day. You a fan too?ThomasEversole wrote:Noods wrote:I see bands like Petra, Bleach and R.E.M. as rock bands. Re: HARD ROCK VS HEAVY METAL
Yeah, that's basically how I think about it if I have to. I'm not too nitpicky about pigeonholing bands into a genre, although I cannot conceive of an argument that puts Pink Floyd into the heavy metal category. Genre labels are pretty porous, particularly when we look at the 70s and 80s and all of the fragmentation of rock at the time. Black metal used to just be a label slapped on metal with satanic/anti-Christian lyrics. Now it is a distinct body of music with its own style. Genre-wise I think of Led Zeppelin as a psychedelic blues band, but I absolutely believe heavy metal would sound a lot different if they didn't exist.

Pink Floyd as metal? nah.. That's like calling Rush metal. Calling them rock or hard rock, sure. But metal, nope.
