Great book and great start to the series!alldatndensum wrote:Killing Floor - Lee Child
Have you seen the series on Amazon Prime Video? My brother-in-law and I were very pleased that it holds to the vibe of the book much better than the Tom Cruise movies. As well, Tom Cruise is simply the wrong body size and height to make a convincing Reacher.

I did see the first season of Reacher! I thought it was a great story. My brother has read all of the Reacher books, and he said it followed the book very closely. I am not very far in yet, but it does seem to track closely with what I saw.
The film crew has begun work on season two of Reacher, and they have been green-lit for a third season. There could be more depending on how that is received.
I have also watched and read the first book in "The Terminal List". It also tracks very closely to the novel.

My brother-in-law was trying to sell me on Jack Carr's novels well before Amazon announced the first season of the show. He lent me The Terminal List but I haven't been reading much lately. I need to pick it up and read it!alldatndensum wrote:Sevenoneself wrote:Great book and great start to the series!alldatndensum wrote:Killing Floor - Lee Child

I had not heard that news about Reacher. That's great news!

Been busy this week, so I'm not into the meat of it, but already there are some interesting points about how a lot of English translations will avoid the word "tradition" when it's in a positive light, but will use it when it's being spoken against.Sevenoneself wrote:The book description on Amazon looks very interesting. Interesting. It looks like it varies by translation. The ESV, for example, use the word positively in 1 Cor 11:2; 2 Thess 2:15; and 2 Thess 3:6. Some translations use it less. Of course, I’d need to check out the underlying Greek words in play.Theonymic wrote:Been busy this week, so I'm not into the meat of it, but already there are some interesting points about how a lot of English translations will avoid the word "tradition" when it's in a positive light, but will use it when it's being spoken against.Sevenoneself wrote:The book description on Amazon looks very interesting. For sure, some translations (especially newer ones like RSV) are more even-handed with it, since the translators were little more separated from the early stigmas against traditions in general.Pethead wrote:Interesting. Yes, although as a professor, my life is based in part on the academic calendar and on conference schedules, so you could say that irregular life is getting in the way.

Nice! Thanks for the micro-review. It does sound like something I'd enjoy whether or not I agree with all of it.Theonymic wrote:Been busy this week, so I'm not into the meat of it, but already there are some interesting points about how a lot of English translations will avoid the word "tradition" when it's in a positive light, but will use it when it's being spoken against.Sevenoneself wrote:The book description on Amazon looks very interesting. Do you struggle reading Calvinist authors? In your interview you said you didn't. I'm not that far yet; everything Calvinist triggers me since our church split.
How is Riddlebarger's book? I've never read a whole book by him but I've had him on my radar for awhile.

Not unless they’re unnecessarily pejorative. (But that goes for anyone across the spectrum). Most of my favorite authors are reformed.
It’s good so far. Although, ever since a friend in college called him “Riddlebadger” and subsequently drew a badger wearing the Riddler costume, I get chuckles when I see his name.
