Assuming you like their logo, do you prefer bands to be consistent and use the same logo on releases?
Same logo over time?
I've always been curious what people think. I'm torn. I like the same logo in principle, like I wish Metallica had kept the same logo for all their releases. But for me, I find it can also blur the albums together and make it hard to remember their differences, like Saint for instance.

Re: Same logo over time?
It depends. I prefer that they keep the same general logo, with minor differences. Metallica's first five albums are a great example. Each album has the same general logo idea, but changed to fit the album better. KEA's is more standard (partially since it was the debut, less money), RTL's got updated to 3d and fit the color scheme, MOP refined it and fit the color scheme, AJFA had it green and broken in the wall in a cool way, TBA was more standard, but fit the dark feel of the cover and album. So which would I vote for then? Change each time?

Re: Same logo over time?
Yes same logo the whole time. To be honest my favorite is when a band has the same logo in the same spot on the artwork and the spine is the same release to release. I like the consistency and it looks more like a collection and less random
I can't stand when a band or label switches cases though. like the first 3 are jewel cases then they go to cardboard/digipack.

I wish bands would use the same logo, but only if it's a good one.
Amorphis comes to mind. I get that their music changed, but still, that original logo was awesome.
I consider Metallica's classic logo the greatest ever, so yeah I wish they would have stuck with that one. Their current logo is similar but I don't like it as much as the original.
I'm glad Ozzy went back to the logo from the first 4 albums. That's a another favorite of mine.

Re: Same logo over time?
I voted yes, but that's on the condition that it's iconic (Tourniquet, Metallica). If the "logo" is really just a stylized band name or if the logo isn't very good, change it.

of course, if I like it...
but, if I don't like it, then change it!

seriously, sometimes they can get it right over and over.
The Crucified comes to mind. Their logos were all awesome, even on the demos...
except for the Take Up Your Cross · Nailed CD...
but, I'm guessing that was another one of those label things(?)

I'm glad Chuck modified Death's logo to remove the inverted cross

Yes, but he kept it as similar as possible. He did remove the weird melting stuff and on TSOP he removed the little ghost face thing. But other than that he tried to keep it the same.StevenCressler wrote:I'm glad Chuck modified Death's logo to remove the inverted cross

Re: Same logo over time?
Same for the first five Metallica albums! That's what I'm going to hopefully do with my band. Same general logo, modified to fit the album and cover.StevenCressler wrote:Yeah, it was a modified logo, not a new one.Christian Thrash Rules wrote:Yes, but he kept it as similar as possible. Further proof that maybe he would have been a tourniquet fan. Not that he was a Christian but was less "satanic" or I guess neutral so it's not that much of a stretch that he could like tourniquet.StevenCressler wrote:Yeah, it was a modified logo, not a new one.Christian Thrash Rules wrote:Yes, but he kept it as similar as possible. Yeah, I think he said he didn't like when bands used Satanism to be edgy and found it lameMaddierecords1 wrote:Further proof that maybe he would have been a tourniquet fan. I've heard that Death band members said he became Christian later in life and he did grow up in a Jewish family I believe.

Re: Same logo over time?
Generally, I'd say come up with an amazing logo and stick with it. Most classic metal bands have done that and nearly all my favorite bands stuck to that plan varying colors and textures. It's part of the band's identity. I find it foolish to do something like Savatage in the 90s when they were my favorite band, had an awesome logo, and for one album jettisoned the logo altogether for a nondescript, Microsoft Word font on The Wake of Magellan. Horrible idea. At least have a logo! Tourniquet did the same thing trying to "fit in."
It seems most often the change is negative. For instance, I really prefer Vials of Wrath's original logo. Brotality, despite their terrible name had a classic metal logo. I now think their new logo looks like it belongs on a 90's hardcore band. Extol went generic like said example above. The list goes on. When a band loses their identity, changes style, or enters a new era they switch the logo. Many times (but not always) the music gets worse.
In other rare cases it is positive. I prefer Becoming the Archetype's second logo. I'm trying to think of other times where the logo got better?

Antestor changed theirs a lot, but I think the 3rd one, the one for the forsaken, is their best one.Frozen Fire wrote:Generally, I'd say come up with an amazing logo and stick with it. Re: Same logo over time?
I can sometimes understand when a band switches their logo if they have a new lead singer (ie, Van Halen going from the wings logo to the curved logo for Sammy, or the updated Judas Priest logo for the Ripper albums).

The music is ALL that matters to me. I could not care less about the logo they use on every album.
