Soundgarden Genre?
They are classified as grunge but I don't know if I agree with that. I think they are more Alt. Metal/Alt. Rock.

It's good you've come along to correct everyone, they've apparently been erroneously classified as grunge for 30 years.

Re: Soundgarden Genre?
I think the grunge thing in the 90's was more what the bands felt and were doing rather than what the music actually sounds like. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden are each pretty different from each other. Grunge more feels like the bands were just doing everything in their power to be anti-mainstream.Black Rider wrote:It's good you've come along to correct everyone, they've apparently been erroneously classified as grunge for 30 years.

Re: Soundgarden Genre?
The thing is Soundgarden is much less grunge sounding than the other bands like Nirvana. And I normally think grunge is just really meh, but Soundgarden is awesome. IMO they sound closer to Alt. than grunge.Temple of Blood wrote:every genre has bands that sound different from each other

Like I said, it's good you can correct everyone, 15 year olds know best.

I'm kinda sick of adults immediately pushing away arguments made by younger people just because "I'm older therefore I automatically know more". Just because you are older doesn't mean you are more knowledgeable. Now, I'm not saying you specifically. This is a website with a bunch of music lovers who have loved it for years and do know more than me in certain areas. There are still areas I'm very confident I know more about than some of the guys here.Black Rider wrote:Like I said, it's good you can correct everyone, 15 year olds know best.

I'm saying people more than twice your age know more. Soundgarden is a poster child for grunge but you want to tell everyone they're wrong. Kid, you have an ego problem.

Re: Soundgarden Genre?
It seems like you have a problem with people disagreeing with you. Anytime I have a different opinion from you, like here or with Ritual Servant, you're response is along the lines of "Yep, you're right, what would I know?" or "You're just 15. What do you know?". And again, just because you are older doesn't automatically make you more knowledgeable. If a 40 year old who loves pop and hasn't done any research into metal said "I know more about metal than you because I'm older", you would agree with them? Again, that won't happen on this website, just an example to show age doesn't = knowledge.Black Rider wrote:I'm saying people more than twice your age know more. I have nothing to say about Soundgarden’s genre except that I don’t like it. However, CTR has a point. All the snarky comments about young people and their presumable ignorance and bad musical taste are not helpful to anyone in the slightest. Heck, the fact that a 15 year old is into Christian metal to begin with is awesome.

So what if he doesn’t think Soundgarden sounds like grunge? It’s fine to correct him respectfully, but getting personally offended at that statement is ridiculous

Thanks. I wish there were more Christian metalheads my age so that I can have someone to talk to in person about my music (my dad doesn't like metal).seth wrote:I have nothing to say about Soundgarden’s genre except that I don’t like it. I don't have any Christian metalheads to talk to in person. But yeah, it is nice not being the only 15 year old here lol.StevenCressler wrote:Well at least I'm your ageChristian Thrash Rules wrote:Thanks. Re: Soundgarden Genre?
If it makes you feel better I also got attacked personally for saying certain hard rock bands didn't play metal just because magazines at the time called them metal.
Interestingly, I read Geezer Butler's book last night and he seemed to agree with me.

I've heard about stuff like that. Bands getting called metal when it's clear that they aren't. Honestly, I think most of Skillet's discography isn't metal.Temple of Blood wrote:If it makes you feel better I also got attacked personally for saying certain hard rock bands didn't play metal just because magazines at the time called them metal.

Re: Soundgarden Genre?
I would say that Soundgarden's early material was more grunge, but over time they morphed into a more sophisticated band that encompassed grunge, alternative, and classic rock.
Either way, they had/have a compelling sound, as do/did AIC and STP, especially at their respective peaks.

AIC is Alice In Chains. What is STP?Constantine wrote:I would say that Soundgarden's early material was more grunge, but over time they morphed into a more sophisticated band that encompassed grunge, alternative, and classic rock.

Re: Soundgarden Genre?
Grunge is a horribly ill-defined genre. I was in Seattle in the early 90's when the musical scene was gaining popularity. Heck even the name doesn't have anything to do with a sound but more the description of damp, dirty garages and practice pads were a lot of the bands honed their sound. But the bands were influenced by punk, metal (especially Black Sabbath), glam rock, pomp and just about every other genre you can think of. That's why early music from bands like Nirvana (mostly just punk early on), Green River (another punk influenced band), Mother Love Bone (glam), Alice in Chains (party-metal early on), Soundgarden (Sabbath and odd other influences early on). That mixture of different influences doesn't define a genre. Even if most of the bands dressed the same it was almost as if they were intentionally not trying to sound like each other. it seemed like the only common thread was that most of them disliked pop-metal music (Def Leppard, Bon Jovi etc.) but just about anything else was up for grabs.
