From what I remember looking into it, that’s essentially what they are.seth wrote:Yeah the fact that it was cloaked in shadow was a major part of its scariness. And also the movie portrayed it as a giant brutish beast, but the book portrayed it as a far more intelligent entity with strong magical powers, sort of a dark counterpart to Gandalf
As scary as the Balrog is, though, my pick for most unsettling line is:
"Far, far below the deepest delving of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he. Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day."

Yeah that past always triggered my curiosity, I wanted to know what the nameless things were. Although leaving it unknown kind of adds to the atmosphere by leaving it up to the reader’s imagination what unspeakable eldritch horrors lived deep in the earth

Considering Gandalf is an angel and the Balrog is a demon, yesseth wrote:Yeah the fact that it was cloaked in shadow was a major part of its scariness. They were having a battle of spells. They were practically dead-even, which is why it took days to finish their battle, and both died.

If I had said that it would mean TH is better than LOTR lol.StevenCressler wrote:I'm between Pethead and CTR on the Hobbit... I like the movies a lot, but LotR is much better
So they are what VR is to TQT

I like how the Balrog is depicted in the TFOTR. If it was the dark shadow it would've been much harder to see in the dark cave.

Finished The Hobbit.
Boring and ridiculous. I hate the running/battle scene in the goblin city.
The cgi is rough.

The CGI in TH is better than LOTR. The goblin city is a great scene, and very important.scottmitchell74 wrote:Finished The Hobbit.

Yeah, I was reminded why I hadn't watched them since taken my girls to the theater.Pethead wrote:The second one is worse. Just go on YouTube and find the barrel scene.scottmitchell74 wrote:Finished The Hobbit.

It's also why my one daughter has yet to open her box set of them that she got for Christmas... 8 years ago! She doesn't care for them either.

I don't see how you could love LOtR and hate TH at the same time. Y'all are just blinded by nostalgia for LOTR. My parents saw each H in theaters and they talk about the scene where Smaug's eye opens at the end of AUJ and how awesome it was. I want to see them in theaters sometime.scottmitchell74 wrote:Yeah, I was reminded why I hadn't watched them since taken my girls to the theater.Pethead wrote:The second one is worse. Also this could be the best scene in any of the six movies (Yes, I'm exaggerating but it's still great)

Lotr at least followed somewhat closely to the books, The Hobbit movies aren't even in the same ballpark as the books.Christian Thrash Rules wrote:I don't see how you could love LOtR and hate TH at the same time. If you are watching the movies hoping them to be really close to the books you're going to get disappointed, every time.Black Rider wrote:Lotr at least followed somewhat closely to the books, The Hobbit movies aren't even in the same ballpark as the books.Christian Thrash Rules wrote:I don't see how you could love LOtR and hate TH at the same time. The LotRs actually stay fairly close, of course they leave a bunch out. The Hobbit is almost a whole different story then the books.

Ok. The movies stories still go together perfectly. TH general story is the same is the books as far as I know. (I didn't say the whole story, the general story.)Black Rider wrote:The LotRs actually stay fairly close, of course they leave a bunch out. Although they almost always do it to some degree, I find it disconcerting when I watch a movie of a book I’ve read and they deviate from the story significantly. Like I said earlier, the Hobbit didn’t need to be stretched into 3 movies and LOTR needed more than 3 to fully do justice to the story

Re: Best Lord Of The Rings/Hobbit Movie
I honestly don’t remember whether the version I watched was the extended or not, I watched it on DVD a while back. Looking it up they STILL completely left out the Tom Bombadil and the Scouring of the Shire parts (the latter of which meant they had to completely reimagine Saruman’s death) in the extended edition, which was one of my major gripes

Re: Best Lord Of The Rings/Hobbit Movie
By every metric by which we quantify movies (RT score, audience score, awards granted, metacritic score) shows LOTR as superior and it's not even close.
Peter Jackson even admits he screwed up The Hobbit. So far this poll is demonstrating that as well. Yeah, you might as well get into a 'do Balrogs have wings?' squabble while you're at it. Fighting for The Hobbit is a chasing after the wind.
I wish Del Toro stayed on to finish the project - he has a much greater grasp on whimsy.

Been a while since I watched it, but didn’t they shoehorn in a romance between an elf woman and a beardless dwarf?
