TV and Movies Hot Takes
The Terminator>T2
Night at the Museum is a better trilogy than Back to the Future. (The first BttF is the best film of the bunch, though).

The show lasted long enough that I also wanted her to be my lover.
I'm not proud. Neither am I ashamed.

The Original in Japanese utterly stomps the US Burr version and is like a different movie: dark, brooding, actually scary...effective.
G Retuns (1984) A very nice retun. G is scary again and everything looks good. The acting is good: serious and straightforward.
G -v- Biollante - I love this! The idea! The monster is cool. Yes! Great one.
G -v- Destoroyah - Really great! The evil oxygen crab-demon monster(s) are great. G's nuclear meltdown side story is interesting.
GMK - Giant Monsters All-Out Attack - Heck yeah! I love the G is an avenging spirit sent to punish Japan's war crimes and that Mothra, King Ghidorah and company are protectors. Merciless G with great battles.
2014 - I thought this was very effective and respectful to the classics. The FX are outstanding. Shame that Cranston didn't have more screen time.
Shin Godzilla - This is a great movie. I love this movie. I love the political commentary/critique of Japanese beaurocracy. I love the presentation of the birth and evolution of a god-incarnate. I hate that he's suffering, but his powers are awesome. I love the creepy, gnarly design(s).
2019 - Again I thought this was fantastic. I love the rendering of Rodan, King Ghidorah and Mothra. I love the origin/reason for G. The FX are outstanding.
2023 - G Minus One - Possibly the best. A great WWII Drama/Love story that happens to have a giant monster at the center/as the crisis. The FX are good enough-to-great. The acting is good-to-great.
The others not mentioned vary from absurd (but even the worst have some redeeming content) to pretty good, if uneven. There are some good-to-great ideas that are killed by FX, presentation, execution or acting.

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah emotionally wrecks me. The scene where Godzilla goes to try to revive his son, followed by Miki saying, “I’ve a feeling this is going to be Godzilla’s last fight” hits hard.

I've been trying to find G-v-Bio on dvd. $$$$$$$Pethead wrote:Godzilla vs. Biollante is probably my favorite “vs” movie of the series.

Rise of Skywalker is the most incompetently told film I’ve ever seen and makes The Last Jedi look like Casablanca.
LotR films>books
Manhunter>Silence of the Lambs

Lord of the Rings: Having taken the Journey 13 times by book, and at least 6 times by film, I can safely say that although the movies are very good, the books are an order of magnitude better. There is backstory and nuance that just can't be captured on film. Your ability to read, sir, is called into question!!
Christmas Vacation is easily the best. I don't even count Vegas Vacation as part of my personal canon. I'm not usually one to allow the unwashed masses to make my case for me, but Christmas Vacation is so well-known and beloved that it is quoted many times more by the gen-pop than the other three combined.
Okay, back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Completely agree about LoTR. There’s just too much story in the books to properly convey in just one movie per book. So they left some significant events out (like the whole Tom Bombadil encounter and the “scouring of the Shire” at the end). Ironically the Hobbit movies had the opposite problem: three movies for one book, with a lot of stuff added to the storyscottmitchell74 wrote:I'm here to correct some aberrant thinking. More hot takes:
Return of the Jedi is every bit as good as the first two.
The Phantom Menace is underrated.
Viewed solely as a film, not as part of the lore, Rogue One is the best film in the series.
Ghostbusters 2 is underrated.
The Godfather 2 is overrated, and is only worth watching for De Niro as a young Vito.

RotJ is my favorite of the Original Trilogy, mainly because of the scenes with Darth Vader near the end. The prequels in general are severely underrated, RotS being my #1 movie of all time.Pethead wrote:The Hobbit movies sucked like a Dyson. A shame, too, because Freeman was an excellent Bilbo.

Also, while this isn't really a hot take among SW fans, the Clone Wars at it's peak is some of the best TV out there. Too many people get thrown off by the first (two) season(s) being somewhat childish.
