Not to mention that downtuning =/= heavy riffs. A lot of thrash is in standard tuning. The riffs themselves are heavy.Black Rider wrote:Check out Winger's Pull and Skid Row, Slave to the Grind. And sometimes heavy isn't the point, nu metal downtunes a lot to be heavy but there's little in the way of hooks.

Lot of folks dis Wendy but I really like her vocals and think she contributes greatly to the band and gives Rez another color pallet to work with throughout the years. She has a gritty punk and new wave edge to her voice that contrasts yet mixes with her hubby's gritty rock blues vokills. She's great.Ammocas wrote:Same here…Nancy Jo Mann of Barnabas and Rosanna from Rosanna’s Raiders are my favorites.MagnusPrime wrote:With very few exceptions, I'm not a fan of female vocals in rock or metal.
Wendy Kaiser also with her gritty vocals.

FHL is the worst of the first five KX albums...hmm... never thought about that. They're all incredible masterpieces for me. My favorite due to the fact it was the first album that opened the King's Door for me is the self titled fourth album.Pethead wrote:Affector’s Harmagedon is kinda boring.
Undeceived is the only truly great Extol album.
Fear Not’s debut is average hair metal but has a killer vocalist.
Faith Hope Love is the worst of King’s X first 5.

It's a mood album. A solitary mood album. When the mood is right both those first two albums can hit hard.

My favorite KX is probably Gretchen, although OotSP is very close. Third would be Dogman.

I highly doubt ToB is any of the ones hitting that button. He could be, but that doesn’t seem like his style.Dustofyears wrote:I'd say the only one getting their butt hurt is the one hitting the dislike buttonTemple of Blood wrote:It's so funny how much further these hot takes are than the things that I say that make some of you so incurably butt-hurt. Just go straight to Korn's first album then their second and third album if you like that. Then Deftones. That's all you need to listen to in the NU metal realm. The rest are copy cats or weak.seth wrote:I will admit I haven’t heard a huge sampling of nu metal, but most of that which I have heard has lyrics that are either extremely whiny or angry tough-guy bragging

I know Dust will agree, given his white-hot love for 72 Seasons.StevenCressler wrote:Hmm... didn't offend enough people with that Metallica one... oh wait

I have to give it to KEA. Not only because of its impact, but because it’s a bit more consistent and it’s not bloated. With less bloat and more focus I could see 72S being a contender, though. It’s probably my second favorite after TBA.

Re: Hot takes.
KEA is one of the most pure fun metal albums out there. It's not the heaviest thrash album, and only half the songs have something resembling deep lyrics. But if you want to put on some music, get in a good energetic mood, and have fun, KEA is the perfect album.Pethead wrote:I know Dust will agree, given his white-hot love for 72 Seasons.StevenCressler wrote:Hmm... didn't offend enough people with that Metallica one... oh wait

Chasing Light and Room of Mirrors are better than anything on KEA imo.

Give their first album a good listen. It's quite insane and full of pure aggression and groove and the lyrics are raw and hold nothing back..no sir, no having to "read-into-the-message-here" it's just one big open raw wound of an album. It's highly emotive and real stuff. If real and emotive is whiny...then probably not your thing.seth wrote:I’ve only heard a few Korn songs, but they sounded just as whiny/angsty as anything out there to meDustofyears wrote:Just go straight to Korn's first album then their second and third album if you like that. Anyway if you feel like it check out these four tunes
Daddy (very heavy themes and lyrics)
Clown (there is a censored video for this too)
Shoots and Ladders (you love nursery rhymes your gunna love this) Video for this also
Faget (that's how it is spelt too. John used to be called that at school and was bullied a lot for being a strange kid etc...
Be warned Korn hold nothing back on that first album and the lyrics and content are about as real and angry as it gets. Great grooves!
