Guitar Noir wrote:Got to go with Metallica. All four have great albums, but Metallica has proven to be most most consistent of the Big 4. The other 3 bands have many highs and lows. Metallica have some dips in quality, but overall they have not been as drastic as the others.
I’d say St. Anger and LuLu were very drastic dips!
As far as consistency goes, Slayer only strayed from their formula once… on “Diabolus in Musica”.

I give Death Magnetic some major points for bringing back the aggressive energy, but TBA still had better overall lyrical integrity.
And nothing on DM is as good as “Sad But True” (one of their all time best songs).

I’ve found things to like on all the albums besides the two mentioned above. But they definitely fell farther than Slayer or Deth.

Tbh, I really like most of later Metallica. I think the main reason most of it gets so much hate is because this is the same band that made the first 4/5 albums, so people expect better from them. (Besides St. Anger, which I don't think is as absolutely terrible as everyone says, does have terrible production and a snare drum that makes each song about half as good as they should be). And I don't really consider LuLu part of their official discography. They teamed up with Lou Reed to make a experimental side project that turned out terrible, but wasn't really an official album in either of their discographies.TZ75 wrote:StevenCressler wrote:Even Death Magnetic?seth wrote:Even the black album is far inferior to the prior albums, and anything after the black album is just plain bad

Re: Big four poll
I agree. Enter Sandman, Wherever I May Roam, The Unforgiven... there's so many great songs on there. And I think there are good things about St. Anger (the riff on Some Kind of Monster, for example.) It's just ruined by bad production. Which sucks, because it's probably their heaviest album.Pethead wrote:TBA is a great album. Unfortunately it set them on a path from which they’ve never recovered.

I usually prefer the technical prowess side of thrash… but on occasion, a simplistic caveman approach is satisfying.

On a side-note, how do you multi-quote? I see the buttons, but how do I actually put them in my reply?

Metallica embrace LuLu like it’s one of their official releases. And St. Anger has a microscopic amount of good ideas. It’s not just the production… the lyrics are juvenile compared to the complex lyrical integrity Hetfield had on RTL to AJFA.
“My lifestyle determines my death style” is an amusing lyric, but it still sounds cheesy when you think back to the deeper sophistication on AJFA.
“Invisible Kid” sounds like a song title from the band Extreme.

Yep, every album got progressively better lyrically up to AJFA (which was the pinnacle).

Yeah... I also haven't really listened to a full song from it yet, I just know it has some decent riffs with a bad sound to them.TZ75 wrote:StevenCressler wrote:Tbh, I really like most of later Metallica.
