Big four poll

This is probably on here somewhere, but I didn't find anything looking it up.

Gotta go Metallica, easily my favorite secular band. Haven't actually listened to all their songs or anything, but I'm sure I'll do a listen-through and scoring someday, and they'll probably join Deliverance and Tourniquet in my top 3 bands.

It used to be Anthrax, but they’ve gone down for me in recent listens. Spreading the Disease and Persistence of Time are two of my favorite albums, though.

I think Megadeth in many ways is the best, both in musicianship and consistency. And Rust in Peace is jaw-dropping.

Slayer is pretty great up through Seasons, but they drop off after that. And their lyrics tend to be awful. South of Heaven and Seasons are the only ones I really spin.

I’m going Metallica. They’ve fallen the farthest, but those first 5 are untouchable IMHBAO. Justice is the greatest metal album of all time and MoP isn’t far behind it.

TL;DR: Metallica on the strength of their early works. But Megadeth is by far the most consistently engaging.

Eh, Kirk is a decent guitarist but once he stopped playing like Dave they lost their sound. I like them, MoP is great but Megadeth rules.

I love Kirk’s solos on the first 4 because they’re far more memorable than most thrash solos.

Hard choice between (early) Metallica and Megadeth, but I’ll go with Megadeth since they kept producing quality even through their latest album, while Metallica fell off hard after Black Album and sucked ever since. Slayer I don’t listen to because of their lyrics, and the only Anthrax song I ever heard sounded like rap-rock more than thrash metal

Based on the strength of the first 5 alone (along with unbeatable nostalgia for the times I associate with this band), I have to go with Metallica.

I don't think Metallica "fell" as much as they "wandered off". I still maintain that St. Anger is the only real dud in their catalog.

Of course like I've said before, they'll never escape the shadow of those early albums.

AJFA is their masterpiece. Best rhythm guitar performance from James, best solos from Kirk, best drumming from Lars.

I think the Black Album has Hetfield's best vocals, though.

Best bass (Burton) performance was probably on MOP.

I've been a fan since I was 10 (1988). They've been a consistent fixture in my life (in one way or another) ever since.

It’s fashionable among some metalheads to bash The Black Album, but it’s a great record.

Bob Rock should’ve taken Kirk‘s wah pedal away, though.

To be fair, Stomp 442 is almost as bad as St. Canker Sore.

Almost.

Stomp 442 is at least listenable, even though it's the most boring record Anthrax ever made.

Metallica. I like much of Megadeth’s catalog too, but those 80s Metallica albums just stand above and beyond all others.

This was tough..

I love the first 4 Metallica albums, but they dropped in quality a lot after TBA.

Megadeth has a few duds, but many more very good albums since The System Had Failed was released. And Megadeth has Rust! Which is arguably the best thrash album overall.

I could go nostalgic and pick Metallica next time!

Got to go with Metallica. All four have great albums, but Metallica has proven to be most most consistent of the Big 4. The other 3 bands have many highs and lows. Metallica have some dips in quality, but overall they have not been as drastic as the others.

Man, I think Metallica and Anthrax have the biggest dips in quality, while Deth and Slayer are a lot more consistent.
