2023 Recommendations (Christian)
What are some 2023 releases you’ve been enjoying? Feel free to include a brief description!
Narnia: Ghost Town
Killer power metal. Christian sounds fantastic, the guitar work is stellar but tasteful, and the lyrics exalt the Name above all names.
Sacrificium: Oblivion
Some profanity, FYI, but death metal that’s both punishing and memorable.
Soundless Whisper: Breakthrough
Gothic metal/rock with beautiful vocals, and some guest work from John Schlitt.
Mercy: The Powers That Be
Some of my favorite black metal ever. Why? THE RIFFS.
Blue Fire Horizon: Disease
Metalcore with a lot of variety and strong lyrics.
HolyName: s/t
Drone metal/worship. Definitely mood music, but good stuff.
Sunroad: Sunesthesia
A fun, bluesy hard rock/metal album with strong Whitesnake vibes (including a Whitesnake cover).
Your turn!

I’m confused on that as well. I don’t hear much Christian in the lyrics, although I’ve seen them identified as such. I’ll call them Christian friendly.Black Rider wrote:Is Sunroad supposed to be Christian? I've listened to them a little before and never thought that about them.

You're correct. The drummer, founder and leader are a Christian, but I don't think that the others are too

From this interview, I'd say they're probably in the "safe secular" category.

What was the inspiration for writing The Powers That Be? Were there any specific
philosophical or spiritual things driving the creative process?
The instrumental part was heavily inspired by Scandinavian black metal and various artists who make Nordic folk music, such as Gåte, Valravn, Wardruna, and Heilung, among many others.
As for the lyrics, well, many black metal bands focus on occult, pagan, or even satanic themes. While I do listen to songs like that, it's not the kind of content I'd like to write. I believe there's room to create somewhat dark lyrics that fit the style without promoting anything harmful.
Since we're not lyricists, I decided to look for old public domain poems. So, the lyrics for The Powers That Be are based on selected poems, often by unknown authors, that have been modified to fit the context and rhythm of the songs.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe you guys are Christians. Can you tell us a little more
about your faith and how it informs your music as artists?
Yes, although not as much as before. Isaque remains steadfast and involved in his faith, while Daniel and I have somewhat drifted away, even though it's still part of our individual beliefs. Regardless, our upbringing was grounded in Christian principles that continue to make sense to all of us in some way. I think the primary influence of our faith can be seen in the way we crafted our lyrics, ensuring that they all have the potential to spark positive reflection.

But abstinence from all secular music is best.

Re: 2023 Recommendations (Christian)
Satirical black Metal from Norway described as a bizarre lovechild of Grave Declaration and Antestor (got me right there). From Nordic Mission, so safe. Reminds me of Havukruunu in the sound.
EDIT: Really digging Mercy, too. Great find.
Sacrificium, outside of Pantokrator, have been the most consistently awesome Death Metal in the Christian scene. New album is deliciously brutal, a little surprised to hear the profanity. The EP from a few years ago absolutely kills.
