Yep.Deadinside wrote:StevenCressler wrote:Not even 3?Deadinside wrote:There are only 2 Mortifications albums, the rest are false.
They rank as follows:
1. Scrolls
2. S/t
And no, a band decides is music is theirs or not. "Mortifications albums" are albums made by Mortification. If those two are different than the majority, wouldn't they be the false ones?
I agree that those are the best, but the rest are still Morty.
I'd say everything after Post Momentary should be called the Steve Rowe band, not Mortification.

I'm on the fence whether I should put Realm of the Skelataur on top of Envision and Hammer or not...
Also maybe Break the Curse is higher than it should be.
The only three albums I have real trouble listening to are Triumph of Mercy, The Evil Addiction Destroying Machine and Scribe of the Pentateuch. I've grown to like The Evil Addiction a bit more because of the great solo guitars and excellent drumming. There might be a time when I will put that above Triumph of Mercy which for the longest time was the one Mortification album I couldn't stand listening to.
Other than those three albums I don't really have too much of an issue with the rest. The Silver Cord Is Severed is an ok album too but you have to be in the mood to go through that. Access Denied is great!

Re: Rank the Mortification Albums
I love melody, but these melodies didn't work.
14. Triumph of Mercy
Some good songs, but the others are better.
13. The Evil Addiction Destroying Machine
Some good riffs and interesting song names.
12. The Silver Cord is Severed
Slower, not too heavy, but some great riffs.
11. Hammer of God
It's soft and cheesy but has some great riffs and melodies. Martyrs is an exception to the cheesiness.
10. Realm of the Skeletaur
Weird mix of the new stuff and the old stuff, but some of the songs were very heavy, with good riffs. Consistent album.
9. Brain Cleaner
Some great songs, some good ones, rather good album overall, I like the vocals.
8. Blood World
Drastic change, but it has many good songs.
7. Primitive Rythm Machine
More like the first three than Blood World. 4031 is one of the best non-first three songs.
6. Post-Momentary Affliction
I know this is a hot take. I really like this album, but it's kind of slow for my tastes. Great vocals, bass, and heaviness.
5. Relentless
Web Of Fire is a top 10 Morty song. Otherwise, consistently heavy, with great riffs.
4. Erasing the Goblin
Some of their best riffs, great songs beginning to end.
3. Envision Evangelene
Great opener, and this album is a collection of songs with great riffs and vocals, and the lyrics hadn't gotten cheesy yet.
2. Mortification
Solid death/deathrash from beginning to end. Great vocals, heavy riffs, good rythms.
1. Scrolls of the Megilloth
Far and away the best imo. Extremely fast, great vocals, and you can actually understand some of the lyrics.

I also just ordered Relentless, Brain Cleaner, and Erasing The Goblin a few days ago.
Prior to this thread's existence I had never owned anything past Envision Evangeline (which I had sold off over 20 years ago). As of tomorrow I'll have everything from the debut through Erasing The Goblin. I thought of everything as embarrassing after Primitive Rhythm Machine. I'm not sure if I'm devolving in my tastes or something notable has changed for the better.

1. Primitive Rhythm Machine
Based on what I've seen here this will be controversial but I really like it.
2. Scrolls Of The Megilloth
A very good album and def top tier Death Metal.
3. Mortification
A pretty good and very consistent debut. Some people say it's thrash, I disagree, it's death.

I actually like them... but early Mort is waaay better (maybe not way more than Envision or Erasing though).Dustofyears wrote:Everything is world class metal up to Primitive. Envision is ok. After that it just turns into the Steve Rowe Goof ball metal show, and I mean no offense to Steve I respect him a whole bunch for still doing what he loved while being one step from the door of death. Strong character. Do people actually like all that stuff or are you just pretending...
Have you heard Erasing the Goblin?

Guess the difference may be that I was there from the start, and very much a death metalhead being that death metal had shown it's ugly face and was a new phenomena in the metal world. It really was an amazing time to be alive. Anyway my point is when PMA came out it was quite a shock to hear Steve using his unique scream, shout, style but I still loved the album and Steve's new shout/scream grew on me. It sucked that Jayson left the band after that album and I was disappointed. Then came Blood world which came as more of a shock but it is still a great album. Then Mick leaves the band too and Steve is on his own and so came Primitive which is the Christian Sepultura Choas AD clone (even so still a very good album)
The came Envision and I saw them on that tour. Envision was the last straw for me. The triumph came out and I gave it one more shot and that was it, Mortification was dead— enter Steve Rowe band.
So this probably gives me a different perspective perhaps. Anyway yes I have hear most of erase the Goblin and I liked Razor back and it from memory it wasn't a complete loss. but if one is finding themselves saying well this song ain't bad and that song ain't bad, that's not saying much for the album on the whole. I have listened to bits and pieces through all those albums and I can't even entertain or humor myself into liking them especially after they had written such great albums before all those.

Blood World is great album. Think it was the first cd I actually bought when I finally made that step from cassette to Cd (I think or least one of the first)

Re: Rank the Mortification Albums
Fast forward to 1998, I picked up the edition of HM with Mort on the cover and read the story, I was intrigued by Steve's story and his battle with cancer, so I decided to give the band a shot, started with Triumph of Mercy since that was the upcoming album based on his battle and return. I liked it right off the bat musically, but took some time to get used to the vocals. This album also came out at a very special time in my life, returning to the faith and attending my first Cornerstone Festival, which would be a very special one indeed! My next album by them was Envision Evangeline, and I was blown away by how good it was, for me, this rivaled anything by Metallica! Then the next year I picked up Hammer of God at the Fest, was just released then, loved it. Though I didn't care for Lincoln's guitar tone as much as on the previous two. More to come...
