Rank the Mortification Albums

Time to do one of the greatest metal bands ever. A lot of people write them off after their early stuff, but we know better!

1. Post Momentary Affliction

One of my favorite albums ever. A masterpiece that ebbs and flows perfectly.

2. Scrolls of the Megilloth

My first Morty album and my favorite death metal album ever.

3. Mortification 

A fantastic debut that is consistently awesome.

4. Blood World

Has some of my favorite Morty songs and I love the overall sound.

5. Hammer of God

Great riffs and hooks here.

6. EnVision Evangelene

Title track and Northern Storm are monsters and the rest is solid.

7. Primitive Rhythm Machine

Solid 

8. Triumph of Mercy

Underrated. A couple of underwhelming tracks, but some fantastic songs, also.

9. Erasing the Goblin

Good stuff, especially Razorback

10. Brain Cleaner

Good stuff 

11. Relentless

Good stuff

12. The Silver Cord is Severed

Good sound and some good tunes

13. Realm of the Skeletaur

I like it. 

14. The Evil Addiction Destroying Machine

I like the sound and some of the riffs but I don’t find the album memorable. 

15. Scribe of the Pentateuch

It’s grown on me, but I still think it’s pretty weak. The drumming brings it down, for one thing.


I consider 1–8 A Tier, 9–13 B Tier, and 14–15 C Tier

I didn’t count Break the Curse but chose to start from the “official” debut. You can count it if you wish.

I really still need to go through their discography but I enjoy the 1st 3 a lot. Relentless also sounded really promising.

It’ll be interesting to see other’s favorites. I know a lot of people put Brain Cleaner and Erasing the Goblin higher than some of the mid to late 90s albums, although I don’t.

I got the debut on cassette and it was the first time I was exposed to death metal. I loved it and still dig this album. 

Scrolls was a great follow up but I liked the debut better for some reason.

I only discovered the rest recently and tbh was not amused to hear the drastic changes. I mean it just isn‘t the death metal sound I loved from the first two albums. I have some of the albums on my spotify playlist but when a tune comes on, I always wonder what band it could be until I look it up. If I look it up and not skip it directly, that is.

    A Death Metal masterpiece
2. Mortification
    This was the first one I heard of theirs and still fits their lineup the best as far as sound goes
3. Blood World
    Cant put my finger on why I love this one so much. Even though its not Jayson the drumming is awesome. A little more thrashy
4. Scrolls
    I know that most will have this alot higher but I dont feel like it aged as well as my 1 and 2. Great non the less.

    Thrashy, groove based metal what more needs to be said.

    Their most complete album, the opening title track is phenomenal.

    Havent listened to this one alot but love the music but the lyrics just started to get super cheesy and it puts me off.

8 Everything else. I have listened to them and they have their songs and moments but nothing compared to the listed above.

Glad to see PMA at 1!

I love Blood World too. And yeah, I don’t think Phil Gibson’s drumming is quite as interesting as Sherlock’s, but it’s still phenomenal. Some of his double kick work is insane.

Yeah PMA was the tour I go to see them on. Sad that Jayson had left just as the US tour started though. Got to hang out with Mick and Steve in the back a little. Somewhere I have a autographed Hevens Metal mag with them on the cover.

I agree Gibsons double bass work is really catchy.

I would also put Live Planetarium tied with Blood World for 3.

Listening to PMA now, and it's not half bad. I am not fond of the high shouts tho. But other than that, it certainly rocks. I still prefer the first two by a mile tho.

Your not big on the debut?

I would put the self-titled 1st album (Mortification) as #1 just because I do not get bored of it, it always sounds good.
Scrolls would probably be #2, but more for the sound and atmosphere than for the song-writing.

The rest are hit or miss.  There are some great songs and some dreck on all of them.  The only one I think is really terrible is The Evil Addiction Destroying Machine.  I only liked one song on it. "Alexander The Metal Worker."

It has recently been updated after Spotify finally added "Triumph of Mercy" and "The Silver Cord is Severed" (I think "Triumph" is under-rated).

The debut is okay but I felt like Steve was still finding his sound.

I agree with the change in direction was to much but Steve believed in a moving of the Holy Spirit to direct him from what I understand. But oh wow lol not for me but it was for others. Personally for me I would have to say Posts is my favorite with a select selection of songs off of Scrolls and the self titled cd. Some of it though was more filler but still really good. My favorite change in style albums that I proudly bought where Envision and Primitive I love those albums just amazing and if they had stayed in that style I would have continued to purchase their music. The last cd I bought was Erasing the goblin it was closer to their old style than what they had done in year's and I always get their Live stuff. I heard Steve try to sing live or growl through Grind Planetarium off one of their final Live albums but bless him it was bad. I wonder if sickness affects growling? One would think the death growl is relatively easy but I guess theirs more to it than just sucking in air and letting it rip

For me I would say thrash with death grunts

1. Post Momentary Affliction (Timeless classic, one of my top 10 albums of all time)
2. Self-Titled (Still one of the heaviest albums ever, the vocals, guitars and production are perfectly heavy to this day)
3. Scrolls Of The Megilloth (Another masterpiece, ranked slightly lower because when I grab a Morti album it is usually one of the top 2)
4. Break The Curse (Really solid, and raw thrash, contains some of my favorite tracks of theirs)
5. Primitive Rhythm Machine (The album that got me into Morti, holds a slightly higher ranking than most)
6. Blood World (A very unique sounding thrash classic)
7. Brain Cleaner (The closest, in my opinion, that they have ever come to replicating the classic thrash sound of the first 5 albums)
8. Envision Evangelene (Really an epic album, but does not get much play time from me)
9. Hammer Of God (Super underrated album, often forgotten but Steve delivers a gem of an album in a style that is out of the norm for Morti)
10. Erasing The Goblin (Probably should have been their final album)
11. Triumph Of Mercy (Really some great death metal tracks on here)
12. Relentless (The last album, that I would really call "good", on the list)
13. The Silver Cord Is Severed (Has a few decent tracks)
14. Realm Of The Skelataur (Really appreciate some of the songs attempting to be like their old stuff, but it comes across as tired)
15. The Evil Addiction Destroying Machine (Fairly boring, and a little too punk)
16. Scribe Of The Pentateuch (Technically an EP)
