Eyehategod Alternatives?
Sludge metal happens to be one of my favorite subgenres of metal. Eyehategod also happens to be sludge metal band I highly enjoy. The heavy, detuned, and bluesy guitar riffs combined with harsh and tortured vocals are what make this band a thrill for my ears. Their first four albums are the best, in my book, with Dopesick probably being my favorite. Not a fan of their latest two albums because, from what I could make of it, the vocals seem to have gotten softer.
Two questions I have: 1) are there any Christian bands similar in sound to Eyehategod and if so what are they? 2) Are any of Eyehategod's lyrics anti-Christian? I read the lyrics are against substance abuse, but don't know any more than that.
Thanks, and God bless!

You can look up lyrics on Metal Archives (Encyclopedia Metallum). I never listened to them back in the day and their name is enough to be a "No" from me now. So, I don't know exactly what they sound like but there are some Christian Doom Metal bands that might be a possibility. Try Starchild first and see if that's anywhere close.

I know the sound you are looking for. Check out my Spotify playlist of Christian Doom Metal, you should find a few bands there that will be to your liking, if not a perfect match (due to the screaming vocals of EHG)

Not an exact copy but try Maylene and the Sons of Disaster and maybe Place of Skulls.

Those suggestions are spot on and I would have mentioned Place of Skulls but figured he'd find them in the Spotify playlist anyway. That said, it's hard for me to think of Maylene & The Sons of Disaster as any kind of Christian band.Black Rider wrote:Not an exact copy but try Maylene and the Sons of Disaster and maybe Place of Skulls.
I know that Dallas Taylor came from Underoath, but aside from a few songs on the 1st album, his lyrics can be pretty out there and often seem to paint himself as a lost soul. Even in my favorite song of theirs, "Darkest of Kin," he screams at the end "God make me pay like the devil I am!" I don't know, the music is great but if I were to say "show me a Christian band with this style," I would hesitate to name them. But if If you have a different perspective, I'm open to it.
All that said, I hope he is doing better after his serious accident.

Sons of God and Crawl are solid southern Sluuuuudge. Crawl is on Stone Groove Records with some other bands that are "christians in a band" and Sons of God is on Doomsayer, which a more secular doom/sludge label.

Constantine, I agree about Maylene, just thought I'd throw them out there as an alternative to EHG.

Re: Eyehategod Alternatives?
If it helps clarify anything with Maylene, Dallas is a Christian as far as I know, but he was playing a character in their lyrics. The entire concept of the band drew heavily from the story of Ma Barker and her gang who famously died in a shootout near where the band was formed, and the lyrics tell the story of their outlaw exploits and untimely deaths. They did occasionally make mention in interviews and such about the point being that such a life would be met with divine justice, but they were never really a Christian band in the usual sense.Constantine wrote:Those suggestions are spot on and I would have mentioned Place of Skulls but figured he'd find them in the Spotify playlist anyway. I don't see any Christian lyrics from Crawl. Am I missing something?
Re: Eyehategod Alternatives?
^I'd be curious about Crawl as well. I've seen their name thrown around in the context of Christian bands from time to time but haven't noticed anything overtly Christian about them either. If so though, that'd be cool because they have a good sound!

Re: Eyehategod Alternatives?
Just found a few options that are worth checking out:
1. Once Nothing - Earthmover E.P., and "First Came The Law
Southern sludge metal / metalcore, on Solid State Records.
They say they are Christians, just not a ministry band.
2. Dead Moons Grey - DMG
Similar to above but more melodic. Sort of like Corrosion of Conformity with lower budget production.
3. Twelve Gauge Valentine - Shock Value
Another Solid State band. Southern metal / metalcore / post hardcore band. Harder and more brutal than the others above. Sort of like Maylene & The Sons Of Disaster crossed with Norma Jean and Haste The Day

I don't know of any "Christian" alternatives, but the lead singer/guitarist/lyric writer and the drummer of Crowbar call themselves Christians and they're the same old school sludge as Eyehategod. The singer/guitarist also has a solo album under Kirk Windstein.

^IIRC the Crowbar guys had some pretty "liberal" theological views that were borderline/beyond Christian orthodoxy, though maybe I'm thinking of someone else. It'd be good to search for interviews and lyrics before you buy anything IMO.

Listening to EHG again, I'd be shocked if any Christian band chose to emulate this style. You'd have to be pretty messed up on drugs to want to be in a band that sounds like this. It's not just normal downtuned 70s Black Sabbath inspired doom, not by a long shot.

Re: Eyehategod Alternatives?
Yeah, I wouldn't say they're Christian as far as the limited evangelical grouping we usually fit "Christian" bands in. Kirk has just mentioned it from time to time in interviews that he believes in Jesus, but it's a very broad understanding of that as opposed to a fundamentalist one. It's personally good enough for me, as I'm fine with all shades of Christianity, but I understand many more black and white thinkers need a long list of qualifications checked before they feel fellowship. They're missing out, but I get it.Kerrick wrote:^IIRC the Crowbar guys had some pretty "liberal" theological views that were borderline/beyond Christian orthodoxy, though maybe I'm thinking of someone else. You're not going to find better sludge similar to Eyehategod than Crowbar, and if there's any faith element I'd say take what you can get. "The Serpent Only Lies" is a great album with lots of positive songs that a Christian can jam and find meaning from. Kirk is all about positivity, rising from the ashes, getting your life straight, etc.
