Christian Alternatives To Secular Bands
Here are some bands that I love(and some I don't) and I want to see if we can come up with a Christian alternative to each one. They don't have to sound identical but something that would appeal to fans of the secular bands.
Metallica - My pick for early Metallica is Deliverance's first two albums. Later Metallica is a little tricker to find a Christian band similar.
Meshuggah - My pick is Prayer. They only have one album (Alpha) and it was released 7 years ago so we might not get anymore sadly.
Slipknot - Demon Hunters first album is pretty Slipknotty.
System Of A Down - SOAD vocals are very unique but P.O.D would probably be closest.
Muse - I have no idea.
Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! - I think At The Wayside. They're not as heavy as CNCC and don't have growls but it's pretty close.
Journey - BB to WUC Petra.
Pink Floyd - Idk
Dream Theater - Theocracy for sure.
DragonForce - Idk a whole lot of Christian Power Metal so... Theocracy!
Toto - Idk
The Killers - I would say Switchfoot probably.
U2 - Switchfoot maybe? I'm not sure, U2 is pretty unique and actually totally safe for Christians imo.
I know they aren't rock but, Tears For Fears - Not sure.
Slayer - Tourniquet(POD) and Living Sacrifice(S/T)
Cannibal Corpse - Mortification probably.
Bring Me The Horizon(old) - I haven't found a Christian Metalcore band with vocals like BMTH. I'm not a fan of them though so I don't really care lol.
That's just a list off the top of my head so you can add some more secular bands if you like.

The lyrics aren’t explicitly Christian, but if you like Pink Floyd you’d probably love Jimmy Brown’s prog-rock project Jupiter VI. It reminds me a lot of Floyd but even better imo

In before the lock! Just kidding, but the idea of "Christian alternatives to _____" always sparks heated discussion so be ready haha.
I'd disagree on Theocracy for Dream Theater though. Affector would be a closer match, and maybe Revelation Project too. Neal Morse if you consider him Christian... but that's a whole other can o' worms!

Yeah I’ve always found DT to be too “noodly” for me, which isn’t the case at all for Theocracy

I agree on Affector as an alternative to DT, but man, they make DT look like the catchiest songwriters on the planet.
Re: Christian Alternatives To Secular Bands
I've never thought of DT as being noodly. DT's ballads feel pretty similar to T imo. The Spirit Carries On feels like it could be a Theocracy song.seth wrote:Yeah I’ve always found DT to be too “noodly” for me, which isn’t the case at all for Theocracy

Hating Evil has a lot of Slayer in their sound.

I also have always thought that Matt's vocals are pretty close to DT.seth wrote:Yeah I’ve always found DT to be too “noodly” for me, which isn’t the case at all for Theocracy

Re: Christian Alternatives To Secular Bands
I find very few prog/power metal bands can touch Theocracy’s level, especially for long songs. Long power metal songs are often rather directionless, and just kind of noodle around and/or have multiple sections with no cohesion between them. The only other power metal band I have heard that can match Theocracy in terms of long song quality is Avantasia

I find that the substitute works better when you try to do it with certain songs of a band, not the entire band.
Christian Bands That Sound Like Metallica / Slayer / Megadeth
Christian Bands That Sound Like Pink Floyd / Led Zep / Aerosmith / Rush

^I agree, because overall bands will always have something about their sound that makes them special. Even different albums by one bands will have that.

This list is handy so I know what groups to avoid.
And I'm really confused by what was said about Meshuggah.

Tourniquet doesn't sound like Slayer to me. The first Living Sacrifice and Ritual Servant do.

Got any recommendations? I’d love to find more top quality prog/power (pretty confident nothing will ever touch Mirror of Souls though)Black Rider wrote:Your not listening to the right power prog.seth wrote:I find very few prog/power metal bands can touch Theocracy’s level, especially for long songs. I have listened a bit to Fates Warning, wasn’t really my cup of tea, but never heard of the other two. Will check them out as soon as I get a chance

Check out Angra (first two albums), Preterist, and Holy Tide.

I put specifically Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance because of the vocals. And Ritual Servant doesn't really sound like Slayer to me.Black Rider wrote:Tourniquet doesn't sound like Slayer to me. The first Living Sacrifice and Ritual Servant do.

Why are you confused? I didn't even say anything about Meshuggah. Also, what do you mean by "groups to avoid"?Black Rider wrote:This list is handy so I know what groups to avoid.
