Songs that you didn't know were cover songs when you first heard it ?
Also, I want to include songs that you feel that bands have covered, but made it completely their own -made it sound as if they could have wrote it.
Heres one that I didn't know was a cover when it came out, and feel as if they could have wrote it....( sorry please excuse the girl on the album coverĀ if it offends anyone )

When Nevermore did a cover song they usually made it " their own."

Queensryche do a version of Scarborough Fair and it's awesome how they make it their song.

S6, who did the original version of that "bad reputation" song? BTW, we've all heard Tesla's Little Suzi, but did you know that not only is it a cover of an early 80s tune, but the video aired on MTV's first day?:

Sanctuary by Deliverance. Originally a Daniel Amos song but D just kills it.

Didn't know Blinded By The Light was a Springsteen song until years later. I prefer Manfred Mann's version I guess because I know it better.

Re: Songs that you didn't know were cover songs when you first heard it ?
Since I'm really into metal, I never got surprised by a song being a cover. Maybe it has got something to do with the fact that I'm an album person, and even when a band is covering something from a similar style (like Hammerfall covering a Pretty Maids song), it feels like there's something different. A few months ago I had the same sensation when listening to Seventh Avenue's Between the Worlds. There was no way that that song Burning Heart (or something) wasn't a cover.
On another note: years before I got into metal, I was into the game GTA Vice City. One of the radio stations on there, V-Rock, was like my springboard into metal. At least in hindsight.
There was one song that I didn't know was a cover, namely Cum on Feel the Noize by Quiet Riot (original artist was Slade). Did not realise that until eight years later, when Edguy covered the same song and it said "Slade cover".

I like both of these. I heard Maiden's first and found out later it was a Montrose song when my brother mentioned it to me.

I didn't know this was from Focus. Or better said, I didn't know about Focus when this came out. Focus is much better, the Vandals did an OK job.
Also I didn't know this was originally from Ruben Blades. I kind of like the Cadillacs better though both are good.

"Gimme Shelter" - Holy Soldier
To this day when I hear the start of the song, no matter what version, I automatically think its Holy Soldier

I didn't know "The Man Who Sold the World" was a David Bowie song until he died. I just assumed Nirvana wrote it. I prefer this version though:
