Bass heroes in Christian Metal Empty Bass heroes in Christian Metal

Post by Guest Wed Dec 28, 2016 9:23 am

In the last few days, I was listening to Mr Big and noticed all the talent of Billy Sheehan.

It made me think of christian metal bass players, and I don't think we have too many names to list when it regards to outstanding talent.
In fact, I can hardly ever think of an album with a memorable bass work on it. Maybe the only album that comes to my mind is Setting the Fire to Earth. That guy is awesome, too bad he had only worked in a single album with Leviticus.

Anyway, is there any bass heroes in Christian Metal?

I regard Jeff Bellew as a bass hero.

The bass just resonates through the song

Although I am far from being the best, I do occasionally come off with a decent bass riff myself.

Since I've played bass the past 15 years there's quite a few memorable ones to me.  A few I can think of not mentioned above are

Doug Pinnick from King's X
Jim LaVerde from Barren Cross

The first name to pop in my mind was Jim LeVerde. Ronnie Konig of Signum Regis is underrated, imo. Also, speaking only on sound, Kurt Bachman killed it on Believer's "Transhuman".

Not sure if he is exactly a Christian but Tony Franklin (The Firm ,Blue Murder, etc.) is an amazing bassist who recorded with Menchen (Bill Menchen) on the "Red Rock" album.

How dare we forget Michael Bloodgood.

Non-metal: Jan Eric (77's).  I rarely get excited about bass but I love the bass on those early 77's albums.

I think the one who has blown my mind the most is the bassist for The Burial.  Saw them live.

Still not a fan of their sound but he was amazing!

Can't forget Warren Harris of Tempest (not the Rowe brothers band, the thrash band) - he was the Billy Sheehan of Christian metal when the "Annihilation Of The Wicked" demo came out:

Monty Colvin from Galactic Cowboys (when they didn’t mind being labeled Christian).

Those first 3 albums have some great bass playing.

I really enjoy Ronnie Konig from Signum Regis. You can tell that he is the main writer in the band in their songwriting, something I love to hear.

I don't think anyone's mentioned Randy George from The Neal Morse Band. I'm not sure if he's a Christian, but it's a Christian band. He's a monster; He's so laid back that he almost blends into the background in the concerts, and then once or twice he comes up into the spotlight and absolutely nails a killer solo!
