Movie sequels that were better than the original
My son and I were trying to think of one, and we were mostly drawing a blank. I was going to say that there are better James Bond movies than Dr No, or better Godzilla movies than the original 1954, but those aren't really "sequels" as they generally are all self contained movies with little or now connection to previous films in the series.
I did come up with 1....
"Terminator 2: Judgment Day" was far better than the original "The Terminator"
Can you think of any others?

Definitely agree about Terminator 2. Makes the first one seem boring by comparison.
My picks:
The Empire Strikes Back
Spiderman 2
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
The Dark Knight
The Two Towers
The Return of the King
Superman II

Re: Movie sequels that were better than the original
I like the first Terminator more than the second... I like how the subject matter is full-on sci-fi, though the movie is totally a horror/slasher film at its core. I liked how dark and brooding it was. T2 was a big budget, crowd-pleasing summer blockbuster. It was indeed a good movie, but I just find the first one a bit more enjoyable.

I didn't like Batman Returns that much. It wasn't a bad movie, but it was a bit too cartoonish for my tastes much of the time. DeVito makes a good Penguin though.
I would tend to agree about The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, except I'm unsure if it should be considered a sequel.

Although I disagree, many think The Godfather Part 2 was better. I found this poll on IMDb.

Some really good selections by all of you...
Kerrick, I agree that the original Terminator was darker and more sci-fi/slasher (still like T2 better though)

I thought Addams Family Values (1993) was better than The Addams Family (1991)

That's true now that I think about it. Maybe that's part of why I didn't like it as much ..... I'm just not that big on those kinds of movies. But also I felt the subject matter cried out for that big-budget action movie treatment.

Compared to Forever and Batman And Robin this is like rated R lol
I disliked DeVito
but enjoyed Pfeiffer
I liked the first Batman best because of Nicholson's Joker
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is the third movie of a trilogy which I also just found out

Good picks thus far. Several that I was thinking. Another that instantly came to mind...
Evil Dead 2.
Evil Dead 2.
Re: Movie sequels that were better than the original
For me the recent installment of Robocop is by far better than all of the others combined

I thought the first Iron Man was better, but IM 2 was ok. So many places say IM 3 was the best but I thought it was horrible.
Beverly Hills Cop, the first one, is one of my favorite movies of all time

Well, yeah, compared to what came after.....
Actually, now that I think about it, maybe the it's not so much cartoonish as it was a little too Burton-esqe, if you catch my meeting. Not knocking the guy or his style, but think there was a bit too much of in the sequel for a Batman film. Or at least what I like in a Batman Film.

I really should see that, since True Grit was awesome.

Re: Movie sequels that were better than the original
Interesting thread, and I find myself agreeing with several these especially this one.
The Road Warrior was vastly superior to Mad Max. Not just because of the bigger budget but pretty much everything else seemed better: storyline, acting, directing, music.
However, the third filme "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" was certainly not as good as "The Road Warrior"

Boondock Saints 2?!? No way! The first was WAY better!!! The second one got off to a real rocky start but I felt by the end, it had "found itself" and became a pretty decent flick. Gosh, my friends in high school and college would watch that movie over and over again. I could probably still quote that entire flick haha. Can't say I've had any yearnings to watch it again lately though.
I'll agree with you on Desperado. I really enjoyed Once Upon A Time In Mexico a lot too. Back in high school, I used to love flicks like those. I've seen most all of Robert Rodriguez's films. Nowadays my tastes in movies are a bit different, but I can still appreciate those from time to time.
Gosh I don't know about Magnum Force... It is really good indeed, though I think I still prefer the original Dirty Harry. Those were definitely the best of the lot though. The other three were entertaining but not near as good.

I thought the original Mad Max had its charm for sure, but yeah, The Road Warrior by far trumps it. That being said, the new Mad Max has the potential to blow both of them out of the water. (And yes, Beyond Thunderdome sucked majorly!)

Re: Movie sequels that were better than the original
If I had to take one of the Terminators, it would have to be 2 -- but I agree that the original was different but very strong on it's own merit. I feel exactly the same about Alien/Aliens, actually. Aliens is an action classic and one of my all-time favorites, it would have to be the pick. But Alien was great suspense/thriller/horror that couldn't have been much better.
SHOCKED to see Rush Hour 2 and Iron Man 2 as being preferred to the originals. Especially Iron Man, which is probably the movie I've enjoyed the most from the last 10 years. Of course, I don't really enjoy movies generally any more, most of the time, and watch very few.
