If Angel of Death and Raining Blood weren't so good (and let be honest though, Raining Blood would be better if it was shorter), Reign in Blood would certainly fall a few spots down in the list. Let's say I would certainly rather listen to Reign in Blood than Christ Illusion and anything under that in the list. Some songs in Diabolus in Musica have grown on me more after I made that list though. It would probably need to be one or two spots higher.

Like for example Reign in Blood.
I actually probably like St. Anger more than Reign in Blood even though Angel of Death and Raining Blood are five star masterpieces. The rest of it is just meh.
Even with the criticism that Reign gets here at the CMR, it’s shocking that you prefer the sloppy and out of tune SA over it! Let’s be honest, Reign is downgraded mostly for the lyrical content…
SA is plain bad musically and the lyrics are kinda midlife crisis cringe.
At least Reign is tightly played and Lombardo had a great drum sound and performance.
I don't care much about what the lyrics are.
I mean hey, I like Manowar too and they are singing "if you're not into metal, you're not my friend"
When it comes to playing tightly and having a great drum sound and performance, I'll just point you to look into The Evil Addiction Destroying Machine which is probably the best example of those qualities not making a good record
Honestly of course Reign in Blood is not a bad album, but by looking at how much appreciated it is - many saying it's the all time best metal album - and then looking into how much of it just is forgettable for me I think it's a very good example of an overrated album.
As it was already said, being fast and aggressive alone doesn't make any album good. There needs to be something special within all that speed and aggression. For me, while Dark Angel's Darkness Descends doesn't have a single song that is as good as Angel of Death or Raining Blood and while I can't probably really even tell which song is which for the most part, Darkness Descends still is a lot better album on the whole than Reign in Blood. There is that extra something in the riffs, in the aggression, in the attitude and in the performance that makes in unbelievably listenable and one of my all time favorite metal albums.
I can’t comment on The Evil Addiction Destroying Machine because I never owned it. I’m not sure I’ve even heard it… I kinda lost track of Mort in those later years (except for Relentless).
With Reign in Blood, I think Slayer were making a statement with speed and aggression. It clicks in around 25 minutes. The songs are short and fast. Maybe that’s why most of them go by like one big blur and only “the bookends” Angel of Death and Raining Blood stand out. I will agree that those are the two best… but I also like Postmortem and Epidemic too. I musically like the whole album! Some lyrics are cringe though (despite that it’s fake theater).
I will agree with Darkness Descends being the better album overall. It’s lyrically dark too, but it doesn’t focus on Satan. That’s one reason that I give Dark Angel major points. They didn’t fall into the satanism gimmick.

I actually agree with your list!
Divine Intervention is sorely underrated. The production is one of the reasons. I think it was recorded at multiple studio locations (which may have made it sound slightly less sonically cohesive).

1. Seasons in the Abyss
2. Divine Intervention
3. South of Heaven
My reason is because of the tempo diversity of the songs, Jeff Hanneman’s integration of his spooky riffs and the lyrical move away from satanic to: social, political and war themes.
It’s more “me” friendly.

Re: St. Anger: Garbage or underrated?
Oh, I agree. James's voice fits that album perfectly. Metal vocals don't have to sound pleasant to make the music better.Airola wrote:This might sound like I'm trolling but actually one of the best things I enjoy in Kill Em All is James' voice! I have a soft spot for the kind of singing where the voice cracks a lot. For example one of my favorite vocal performances is by Devil Dan of Cross Examination in their album Menace 2 Sobriety. He changed his singing style a lot later because going with that would've destroyed his voice completely. I love actually great singers like Eric Adams from Manowar but I also love the singers who shamelessly let all of their inabilities shine but they clearly belt it out with no walls between them and the mike, with no false pretense.

I’ve flip flopped between South and Divine in the past.
But I think I’m leaning more Divine lately.

They make some very left-field decisions. They are millionaires that take chances and don’t care. It’s just a hobby for them, and an excuse to play live and tour. Most of their money comes from the live gigs and t-shirts.
But at this point, they know that they will automatically be loved by their fans no matter what they throw out there.

Yep. Been flogging that horse for a while, Metallica is all about money and they could careless about their fans but smile at them so the money keeps rolling in. They are a business and a brand like McDonald's and no longer a band.TZ75 wrote:Metallica could be considered the best example of not caring what the fans want when they make albums.

And their fans are the dumbest on the planet. They accept anything this business with instruments in hands will pump out. They are no better than Taylor Swift fans in my eyes.
