The best instrumental metal
One is my favorites is Koyaanisqatsy - From the Yearning to Burst the Perpetual Circle. They are a band from Germany that only released this one album. You can find the audio on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL61701FEDAD69FCA6

I can enjoy (or at least tolerate) an EP of instrumentals. As long as there’s plenty of catchy riffs and some speed to move it along, (opposed to a slow batch of doom songs that go nowhere).
My idea of doom is Psalm 9 by Trouble. And it does have one instrumental “Endtime”. But that song is full of great riffing!

Recollections of a Life Once Lived is probably the best of the SA ones. And yeah, all three of those Metallica ones are great.Dustofyears wrote:Can't think of any full instrumental metal albums. But I do love Metallica's Instrumentals from Lighting, Puppets and Justice, and Seventh Angels Instrumentals fro Lament. They'd be my favorite Metal Instrumentals.

Honestly believe had they become a house name like Slayer and Metallica etc, that drum fill to start Recollections off would've been Iconic. Yeah I love that Instrumental what a great why to began a great album. Also, like Jayson, Tank has a sound of his own on the those there skins.StevenCressler wrote:Recollections of a Life Once Lived is probably the best of the SA ones. Re: The best instrumental metal
The problem I think that we all would run into is that none of them have one album that is engaging all the way through. I end up creating custom playlists of my favourite songs from a variety of artists. If anyone wants me to post some of my favourites from them, just ask. If not, I'm too lazy to do it of my own initiative...

But there were some good ones by Vinnie Moore, Jason Becker, Greg Howe, Marty Friedman, Tony MacAlpine, Joey Tafolla, Michael Lee Firkins, and others.
Also the last Angelica album was really good, the instrumental one called "without Words."
I don't think too many people gave it a chance but it's quite good for what it is because Dennis Cameron's playing is sensitive and engaging, not just balls-to-the-wall like many shredders.

Re: The best instrumental metal
DAH!!! It's got lyrics in it! How'd I forget that!
And if we're talking guitar virtuosos then a bunch of those too. Guess Vinnie Moore is Neoclassical metal, more so his early work. Don't think Malmsteen has ever produced a record that is fully instrumental, aside from with the Japanese Philharmonic Orchestra, but not a studio album that I can think of.
