Favorite song on The Black Album?

I’m not talking about the masterpiece that is Spinal Tap’s Smell the Glove. Obviously it would be sacrilege to choose one song over another when it comes to the wonder that is this album. There is none more black.

No, I’m talking about the other Black Album: the one by Metallica.

Not gonna do a poll since there are too many songs on this album. I will say I skip Nothing Else Matters and The God That Failed.

Anyway, my favorite is Don’t Tread on Me.

I think this is a great album that unfortunately kicked off a severe downward trajectory for Metallica.

Of Wolf and Man. The triplet dampened stringed percussive rhythm guitar part imitating a wolf running towards the end is really clever (usually used for a locomotive effect)

The lyrics are primal, primitive, Primordial— back to the meaning of life! Back to nature! Mentally it evokes images of the wolf hungry and baying for blood and life while running through mist. Seek the wolf in thyself. Love the message. Love the song.

Overlooked song on the album.

It's a good album and very influential at the time. I would argue Enter sandman put the door way to metal right into the heart of the mainstream. A great album in more ways than one.

And standing on it's own merit it is better than most and equal to the best heavy metal/rock albums out there.

Why's no one said Enter Sandman? That's my second pick, and was the first Metallica song I heard. It's got a reat riff and chorus.

Enter Sandman is a good song for sure and would probably be my #3. It's just been played to death on radio, sports events, intro music, etc. It's like "Freebird" or "Purple Haze" or (fill in the blank), good songs that I just get tired of hearing after a while.

Even if Enter Sandman wasn’t overplayed, I would still choose Sad But True. It’s one of their top 20 best songs!

One of my favorite slower tempo tunes like Pantera’s Walk. Godzilla metal!

Actually, I've heard Sad But True playing at events more than Enter Sandman the past few years. Inside secret: I don't hate it, but I've never liked it.

Nothing Else Matters and Queen's The Show Must Go On are both songs I would love to say I don't like because I've heard them way too many times, but whenever they play I can't do anything else than admire the songwriting and the sense of melody.

Nothing Else Matters and The Unforgiven are both 5/5 tracks. Enter Sandman is a 4/5 song. I'm not too much into the rest of the album. It's ok and I don't think any of the songs are bad, but a lot of them just don't hold my interest for too long. It's mostly 2½/5 and 3/5 for the rest of the songs. Pretty much all of them are short enough too and not bloated like what some songs in Justice were and what a lot in their latest albums are.

Unforgiven is probably my favorite.
