There are definitely songs with hip-hop influence though, like Golden Calf.Black Rider wrote:MostlyStevenCressler wrote:So you'd consider that album groove?Black Rider wrote:10 minute oil change was before they went nu, it actually still had a Pantera sound. I agree that nu is simpler, I like a few songs but not albums, except Chevelle, if they're considered nu.

Depends what one calls quality and interesting. Don't get me wrong I like some some thrash but a lot of it just sounds like the last thrash band.Temple of Blood wrote:Thrash metal guitarists work 1000x harder on their riff quality than nu-metal guitarists do. Plus they try to integrate different guitar textures to make things interesting: clean channel melodic passages, dual guitar parts, guitar harmonies, guitar fills, and lead solos.
It creates for more interesting music even if the vocals are merely average.
KOrn, Though I am not a mega fan of the band, bar the first record and most of the second record then a few songs here and there from some of the others, korn have very interesting riffs and Syncopated rhythms and grooves that are easily overlooked, such as in the song Clown fro example where all the snare shots are hit in unexpected off beat places yet feels Heavy with groove, not to mention the weird obscure textures and layers of quirky and dissonant guitar effects and harmonies and noises never heard before Korn came out and started the genre.
They have a huge textural soundscape moving around on top of heavy grooves. They WERE like a heavier Primus. Them and def Tones are the origin of the Nu metal assault then along came the rest with their own spin then as usual the multitude if imitators came out.
I don't know any Christian Nu metal bands except for Pod, which to me is a very tame watered down version of Korn.
Again I guess you had to be there when they hit the market to fully understand the impact. They where the first and there was nothing like it around. Like Korn's third album title states: Follow the Leader

They were each the spearhead of their respective movements.
I'm not a huge Korn fan, but they do have some interesting material here & there.
I remember liking the first 2 Deftones pretty well when they came out, but I didn't listen to them much at the time. I think I traded them off for something. I don't remember. That was about 25 years ago and I haven't listened to that band since, so I don't really remember a lot about them.

I will say Disciples album “Back Again” was the very first metal album I can remember hearing when I was a kid. It will always have a very special place in my playlist…but…nu metal as a whole is one of the corniest metal genres.StevenCressler wrote:Everyone loves thrash, but so many hate nu metal... they are actually very similar. Listen to Disciple's "10 Minute Oil Change", it's got a very thrashy riff. The main differences are the vocals and atmosphere, which I understand can ruin the genre for some people. And the riffs do tend to be slower and lower-tuned (though that does make them very heavy at times). I think Nu is the most underrated metal genre by far.

Korn and Deftones, and especially Korn, were the last rock/metal band and movement to change things up and make a real impact since Nirvana and the grunge scene.
Remember seeing them for the first time on a late night show and the video for Blind came on, this was just before they exploded months later, and it definitely grabbed my attention. About a month or so later their first and best album came out and snatched it up like a kid in toy store.

It's very Korny. Except for Korn's first album! And Deftones.ShotGunderson wrote:I will say Disciples album “Back Again” was the very first metal album I can remember hearing when I was a kid. Check out the clown video by Korn and Deftones videos Diamond eyes and hole in the earth. All good examples of well written NU metal. Just have to ignore the bro caps and the home boY vibes. Just listen to the music. That's good music.

For anyone interested here are those videos first one is korn, and try and get in the headspace that this came out in the 90's for the first time, no other sound like it, no flood of nu metal bands, Korn is it.. This the censored version.
The other ones are some great deftones. Deftones came out about the same time.

Found the deaf guy.
Don't know about you guys, but I can't wait to see Deftones and Edguy on their Defguy world tour.
OK I'm sorry. I am so, so sorry for that one.
