Favorite And Least Favorite Metallica album?

I see there was a thread on this in 2017 but decided to start a new one.  

I've never been a big fan of Metallica but like their songs every so often.

I'd have to say my favorite is the Black album, closely followed by Master of Puppets.

The Black album has way more filler than MOP, but it also has some of my favorite Metallica songs like "Wherever I May Roam," "Nothing Else Matters," "The Unforgiven," and "Sad But True."  I appreciate the more melodic style.

MOP though is the best of their thrash output IMO.

As for least favorites, I have tried to listen to albums like St. Anger and Death Magnetic but I find the song-writing so boring.  And the guitar sound is horrible.  

Hardwired is pretty decent though.  But why they refuse to fix the bass on "...And Justice For All" is a travesty and generally how they treated Jason Newstead really pisses me off.

St. Anger

Justice for me, by a tiny nose hair over Puppets. Next would be Lightning, then Black, then Kill.

Least favorite is St. Anger by far, unless we’re counting LuLu.

The Loads, Death Magnetic, and Hardwired all have their moments, but if I’m in the mood for Metallica, I’m pretty much always gonna go for the first 5.

I don't know much about Lulu...I just heard that it is horrible.  It doesn't appear on many platforms or Metallica album ranking lists so I gather that fans and/or the band want to forget it existed....

The only explanation for it is intentional parody along the lines of Lou Reed’s own Metal Machine Music.

LuLu is not a Metallica album. 

It was technically a collaboration, but basically a Lou Reed album with Metallica as the backing band. An avant-garde metal experiment. Though as with St. Anger, aside from a few interesting riffs, it was a failure.

RtL is my favorite album but MoP has my favorite song in Sanitarium. I enjoy Justice and the Black Album quite a bit and the last couple have some decent stuff. Of course St. Anger is my least favorite, it's downright embarrassing.

Favorite is Lightning. Least favorite out of the ones I know is the black album. Never listened to the Loads, St. Anger, or Hardwired.

Justice is a weird album in that it has some songs that I don't like at all, but it has just enough excellent songs that makes it number three.

I like St. Anger.
It's very underrated.

If St. Anger had the benefit of a 90's Metallica production (especially in the drums and vocals), that would easily make it a 6/10.

I still don't think the songs themselves are too great, though. Sweet Amber is cool. The Unnamed Feeling is pretty good. Other than that, there are a few decent riffs here & there, but I just don't think it's a good album (and I'm usually really good at enjoying something for what it is and not comparing it to the rest of a catalog).


As it stands, it's a 2/10 ...at most.

I think St. Anger needs more polish in both production and songwriting.

This is probably my order, as well, although I don’t know if I’d put Load or Reload higher.

Favorite would have to be Master of Puppets (Ride The Lightning is right there, though), and least would be St. Anger.
