This album SMOKES. Easily an AotY contender.

Well Angelic Warlord gave it a 100% so I think that answered my question. Bought it!

I pinged the band on Facebook about digital and they said "I'm not sure what Retroactive is doing with digital" Dont have alot of faith a digital will be very soon.

I'll have to try to find time to watch that interview, but I'll say after a couple of spins that I miss the more straightforward lyrics of previous albums. This is still one of the best albums of the year for sure, though.

Always best to hear the writer's perspective without a filter but to give a basic summary, Dave told Richard Lynch the lyrics were "spoon fed" in the past and wanted to challenge the listener more.  I think the guys on the show did a great job asking about some of the most interesting, unclear lyrics (my biggest reason for listening to the interview actually). In Dave's answers, it was also clear that he is a stream of conscious writer as he at times didn't remember what he wrote and, with some of what he wrote, it seemed clear that it was a thought at the time that he just went with (Creature is about a bus ride to heaven of all things). 

I don't need bold-faced lyrics with every band but I don't really like when I have no idea what's going on. Saint was always a band that, despite pretty straightforward lyrics, retained a challenging message that I've appreciated. With this album that changed but the interview helped me get it a little more. 

Dave said he wanted to co-write lyrics with Richard on the next album though. A mix of both styles would be cool.

Thanks! I don’t have a problem with the lyrics as such, but I do think that we can give straightforward scriptural lyrics that don’t amount to the simplicity of something like Whitecross. Petra was a great example of straightforward scriptural lyrics that also required thought and wrestling.

Just got my copy and listening in the car today. Will report back soon! So far every song is good.

I would say its a very solid 9/10 and top 5 for the year just not sure where it falls in that 5.

Its a little more straight forward old school Saint vibe musically than The Calf but a much improved version of that sound. I will always prefer the David Nelson stuff to all other Saint (I know that isnt a popular opinion) cant wait to hear whats next.

J/k, Nelson is a beast.

After the first listen, gotta say, it’s probably the second best Saint album just behind Time’s End. Heavy crunch throughout and lots of hooks. Nothing cheesey here, just driving fist-pumping goodness. Reminds me of listening to Fallen by Stryper, new level of heaviness, confidence, and consistency for the band.

Based on the 100% review on Angelic Warlord, I purchased this. I have to say, I hate it. This is not Saint anymore, at least to me. If anyone would like a copy, I will sell mine for $10, shipping included just send me a PM.

Interesting. What don’t you like about it? My only critique is the vaguer lyrics.

There are no hooks. I don’t care for the new singer. The song structures are different than anything previous, almost progressive. I just don’t like it at all. If I want Saint, I’ll pull out Time’s End or In The Battle or Hell Blade.

Gotcha. 

I think there are hooks, but I’ll grant that they’re more subtle. I love Josh, but I think Dan has a killer voice. 

It doesn’t top Time’s End or Too Late for Living. But I don’t know where I’d rank it otherwise.

But if it doesn’t click for you, no harm, no foul. I thought The Brave’s new one was a massive disappointment, but others seem to love it.

I'm a huge Angelic Warlord fan, but I never buy an album based only on his review. I have slightly different preferences than Andrew, and I have not enjoyed some music he has rated high. Some examples: Deliverance's Learn at 95%(I personally don't think the genre shift worked at all) and Affector's Harmageddon at 100% (I may change my opinion in the future but the non-poetic vocals fell flat for me). 

So...I haven't made a decision yet to buy it or not, but I won't buy it just on AW's review; I'll use Andrew's thoughts as part of my choice.

Same, although I like Learn. I feel the same about Affector. It’s well-done, but it didn’t grab me. I feel it’s similar to the new Seventh Servant in the lack of vocal hooks, but 7thS has better riffing.

reviews not necessary, I bought it because...it's Saint.
I even have The Perfect Life    for crying out loud.

Saint is one of those bands I just blindly buy...

Same for me. And, outside of TPL, they’ve never disappointed!

How does everyone feel about the lyrics?  I know they're vague, but are they too vague to make any sense, or is it still clear where they stand and what they're singing about?

For me, it kinda varies by track, but I haven’t taken a deep dive. There’s definitely some clearer lyrics alongside the more vague ones.
