Which Band Do You Like Better?
Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
Teramaze is WAY more musically sophisticated than Antithesis.
That said I do not consider either a "Christian band."

Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
Yeah, if anyone needs to move this to the other forum, no worries. I put it here because I usually see both bands lumped in with Christian bands. But I agree their lyrics are not very clear.
That being said, I went with Antithesis. I like the intensity of their music combined with the melody. The musicianship is INSANE. But I like both bands a lot.
What's funny is that I usually hear Doxology as being a "thrashy" album, but I find Antithesis's first two albums to be far "thrashier" than Doxology.

Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
I would consider Teramaze (1st 2 releases and maybe the 3rd) to be Christian but they are no longer labeled that way.
As far as the poll not should I could pick, especially since each of their first 2 releases were so good. I would put Teramaze more in the Power/Prog with thrash influences.

Dying for Life v Doxology should be the question.

Doxology had thrashy elements but is a power progressive metal album imo. Voted Antithesis as I prefer their albums.

Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
Everyone here seems to be equating Teramaze with Doxology, maybe because that was their Christian album? Because their more recent material is miles apart from that. It's very, very different.
If the poll is really Doxology vs. whatever from Antithesis, I'd change my vote to Antithesis. But if it's Antithesis vs. the entire catalog of Teramaze, I'd stick with Teramaze.
I feel like this poll may have gone in a direction that was not intended...? Not sure but it seems like it if Teramaze is being evaluated on one early album.

Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
Personally, I was evaluating both bands on the albums I have:
Antithesis and Dying for Life
Doxology and Anhedonia
I really like all those albums.

I really like all those albums.

I prefer Antithesis’ debut over Dying for Life, although both are great.average joe wrote:Dying for Life v Doxology should be the question.
Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
Esoteric Symbolism, Her Halo, and I Wonder by far blow away anything Teramaze did in the past (well maybe with the exception of the song "Shadows"). But again, they are very different, and again, they are not Christian albums.

I might check those out. So many albums, so little moneyConstantine wrote:Esoteric Symbolism, Her Halo, and I Wonder by far blow away anything Teramaze did in the past (well maybe with the exception of the song "Shadows"). Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
Just listen to them first on You Tube or Spotify to see if you like them.
Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
Does anyone know where the Antithesis got labeled a Christian band? I know the lyrics are on the vague side. Did any members say they are Christians or something

Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
No idea, I've just always seen them referred to that way. I know AngelicWarlord has reviewed Dying for Life, and metal-archives lists their lyrical themes as "Christianity, life experiences, positivity." I do think there are hints of Christianity in the lyrics. (In the case of Limbo, Catholicism).mothy wrote:Does anyone know where the Antithesis got labeled a Christian band? Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
Exactly. I listen to some secular music, so I appreciate most that’s at least “Christian-friendly.” But I bought Antithesis because I thought they were a more straightforward Christian band. But no biggie, because the music shreds.mothy wrote:Yeah Im in the same boat as you. I went off of those sources and didnt see or hear anything bad in the lyrics. Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
In an old Whipping Post review of Dying life it does state:
"The band is embraced by many in the Christian metal scene, but the band does NOT claim to be a Christian band. The lyrics deal with a lot of spiritual things, but that is not the whole of the band. Regardless, the lyrics are very well written and a very good read."

Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
When James Lewis played in Temple of Blood he thought of Antithesis as a Christian band. He told me also that every member was a Christian.
And Teramaze's last few albums are horrible generic "metal" bereft of character or good ideas.

Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
I like the first few Teramaze albums but not their more recent stuff.
I couldn't get into Antithesis.
So, I voted for Teramaze.

Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
As a northeast Ohio guy I rooted for Antithesis. I really enjoyed the self-titled (Limbo and The Web are total classic songs) and went to the CD release party for Dying For Life in Cleveland. James, their bass player, was talented and a super nice guy, "Krusty" their drummer was part of an online community I was part of and Ty had some really dynamic vocals (a mini-Russel Allen). That all seems kind of random but I thought they had a lot going for them with one exception, at that point Euro-power metal was all the rage and beyond Iced Earth and Jag Panzer the U.S. seen didn't have much going for it on the world market and had very little support at home. It was an uphill battle for bands coming on before the internet exploded. By the time Dreaming Reality came out they weren't really active in a real way, James and Ty were gone, the moment passed by and very few in the communities I was a part of knew it came out. Great band that in different times may have and should have become much bigger.
On the other hand, for Teramaze I only had their album Tears to Dust back then. It was fine but didn't have the teeth to it that I wanted. Maybe a false impression of that album since it's been years since I listened to it but I thought of it as a less interesting mid-period Fates Warning. I knew I'd like Doxology more but could never find it. When Anhedonia came out I picked it up and enjoyed it but the spiritual content wasn't really there. I never really kept up with them afterward but have enjoyed everything I heard. For some reason Dean has a reputation for being impossible to work with but he certainly is an amazing talent.
In the end, though I may like Teramaze more if I picked up all their material, Antithesis gets my vote.

Re: Antithesis or Teramaze?
I think more folks would've come around to Antithesis if they had stuck around longer, played more fests, and just released more albums in that same style. Their style was never trendy but they were a cut above just about everyone else at that time.
When they lost their main songwriter, it was over and I don't think that 3rd album even sounded like the same band though it had a couple of the same members.
