Speed metal reccomendations?
I've been listening to a lot of 80s speed metal lately, What are some good bands (Christian or secular) in this genre (it's not exactly thrash, though there can be crossover, but speed metal tends to be slightly more melodic and faster than most thrash) ? I know about the following already:
Exciter
Razor
Raven
Hallow's Eve
Hirax
Liege Lord
Agent Steel

Check out band called mortification their "Self titled album" and "Scrolls of the megilloth album" very good place to start!WildWorld wrote:I've been listening to a lot of 80s speed metal lately, What are some good bands (Christian or secular) in this genre (it's not exactly thrash, though there can be crossover, but speed metal tends to be slightly more melodic and faster than most thrash) ? Hard to beat Hirax!! Traitor's Gate is pretty solid.

Re: Speed metal reccomendations?
I will have to circle back when I have more time to give some specific recommends.
In the meantime, for Christian bands, check out my Spotify playlist called "Christian Speed Metal - Old & New."
I worked hard on it and it features songs from Christian artists that (I believe) qualify.

Re: Speed metal reccomendations?
I love Speed Metal. It really is its own genre and not to be confused with Thrash or Power Metal.
A couple of bands off the top of my head:
Avenger/Rage - (German, same band but they changed their name)
Kruiz
Trojan - UK (Had one album Chasing the Storm)
Enforcer
Atomkraft - First Album
Savage Grace

Speed metal is hard to nail down, I view bands like Rage, Liege Lord and Agent Steel as american power metal.

I hope this is sarcasm. Mortification’s first two albums were death/thrash and death/grind. Speed metal is fast tempo riffs played tight and clean, and “higher register“ melodic vocals.

Would agree about Liege Lord and Rage. Agent Steel's first album however, I would consider pure speed metal.Black Rider wrote:Speed metal is hard to nail down, I view bands like Rage, Liege Lord and Agent Steel as american power metal.
The 2nd album was maybe half speed and half power metal, but the faster songs were still much faster than most U.S. power metal (like say, Vicious Rumors). That's just my take anyway.
Re: Speed metal reccomendations?
"Gates To Purgatory" is great speed metal and one of my favorite albums from back then.
Just wish the lyrics weren't a lot of "Satan this" and "Satan that." That was the image they were going for back then.
Same with a few other German speed bands of that era.....

Hmm, I never listened to Agent Steel's first album but checking it out, you're right. I think I prefer what the morphed into.

Re: Speed metal reccomendations?
I have always liked the 1st record the best. I remember buying the cassette at Bleecker Bob's after hearing it blaring out of their stereo system and thinking "Whoa, that's cool, who is that?" Well as I am purchasing the tape the clerk says "by the way, the band is right behind you." Turns out the band was there for an in-store (sans Jon Cyriis) but I didn't notice them (lol, I thought they were just metal dudes browsing). Anyway, they were very friendly and pulled a poster of the album off the wall and autographed it for me. Those were the early days of the underground metal scene, interesting timesBlack Rider wrote:Hmm, I never listened to Agent Steel's first album but checking it out, you're right. That song comes across as parody but it is speed metal.

Re: Speed metal reccomendations?
When that album came out it was not taken seriously because it was seen as an over the top parody. To this day I'm not sure what it's intentions were.
Re: Speed metal reccomendations?
IMHO the first two Grave Digger albums are great classic listens, while Vulture from Germany is a good modern band.
