Mini-LP Sleeve Hate
piggybacking on the other thread...
Mini-LP sleeve peeves:
- tends to scuff the CD when removed/put back in
- can be way too tight and a pain to get the CD in/out
- can be way too loose and CD can fall out when you aren't quite paying enough attention or if you store them "spine out" CD can easily fall out when pulling off shelf
- repeating what I said about digipak, OCD talking here, when you store them
everything is not the same size, as the vast majority are jewel boxes, AAAAAHHHH!!!!
I have to confess, as much as I don't like Mini-LP sleeves, I hate them a little less than I used to... you see I had heard the term but never made the connection to "carboard sleeves" and that they look amazingly like a vinyl record. kind of embarrassing that I never realized that until somebody mentioned it, here I think, a few weeks ago...

Re: Mini-LP Sleeve Hate
I have like 3 or four of these. Obviously from that last thread I am not a fan. They never fit in the sleeve well (most or all of mine are too tight). I bought one brand new and the disc was already scuffed (probably just from being inserted into the sleeve). It played fine though so I didn't return it. Also far too thin to find quickly in a large stack or collection of cds. I thought I had lost one once, and it was just sandwiched in between a jewel case and digipack so that it wasn't even noticeable.

I no longer have any but agree that they are terrible.
I dare say, they are worse than the digipacks.

I really like them for the simple reason that I can buy 10 cd's instead of 2 and my wife is none the wiser.

Re: Mini-LP Sleeve Hate
As far as from an artist's point of view, they are extremely for us to have manufactured. If you don't have a huge fanbase, having physical product manufactured at all can be a risk. On my last blues/rock album, I have sold very few CDs. I have had more interest in the digital side. I have sold enough downloads to cover the costs of the CDs, but I have a box of them sitting at the house that I will probably end up either giving away or tossing in the trash. I don't know if I will ever print another CD.

I didn't say I would never record another album. I just don't sell enough physical product to make it worth my time to be honest.
Re: Mini-LP Sleeve Hate
I have the Yes Studio Albums '69 - '87 box set. Every disc comes flying out of the mini-LP sleeves like a frisbee.

I'm probably the minority but I would much rather have a professionally recorded CDr in a jewel case than a silver disc in a cardboard sleeve or a crappy quality digi-pack.

Now think about labels that print up 1,000 and have them sitting in a garage somewhere.

It depends. for someone like alldat I'd prefer a CDr to no CD at all. For a label like Retroactive or Roxx it would be disappointing.

When I do new music, and I am writing stuff now, most of what I do will be downloads. If I do CDs, it would be a limited run of 50 with CD-Rs in cardboard sleeves. If I thought full packaging would actually help the disc to sell, I might go that route, but I just don't see doing that again. Like I said, I have sold more downloads of the last two blues albums than I did physical product.

yeah, I'd agree w/that...
I rip all my CDs so most of my CDr hate is the fact that about 85% of the time they are at best a royal pain to get a good rip from. at worst it is impossible...
Re: Mini-LP Sleeve Hate
I just generally support bands doing whatever is best for their product and what will sell for them. If physical product doesn't sell, then don't waste time with it. People that refuse to buy downloads because they demand CDs are just hurting themselves and the band, because literally no one else cares. They don't get to hear the music, and the band makes less money. To me, you are not a true fan of a band if you refuse to get their music for some irrelevant reason like "no downloads!"

Re: Mini-LP Sleeve Hate
I've purchased downloads from bands that didn't create physical cds. If I like the band I want their music. I would just prefer to have it on a cd, but if all I can get is MP3 or FLAC, I will take it.
